The External Affairs Coordinator will assist with efforts to raise the visibility of the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a national model for urban manufacturing, and to increase public support, interest, and funding for the mission of the Yard through coordinated communications, marketing, press, and fundraising strategies. 


Areas of Responsibility



  • Lead the creation of compelling, persuasive, relevant, and accurate communication content that will increase funding, visibility, and visitorship
  • Support creation of brand, communication, and marketing strategy for the Yard, its sub-brands, and specific projects
  • Provide coordination support for the Head of EA and outside press and PR firm on press strategy, tactics, press releases, press events, media inquiries, content gathering/development, fact checks, and story pitches; partner with outside PR firm to lead the creation of relevant materials
  • Help implement a communications and marketing strategy to ensure high-impact digital communications; take a lead role in social media outreach and strategy development
  • Research and provide support for appropriate speaking engagements for executive staff to promote the work and mission of the Yard
  • Produce content for collateral material, advertising, other marketing/communications content
  • Manage website updates

Grant/Donor Management

  • Prepare grant applications and manage grant reporting
  • Help identify, cultivate, and build relationships with corporate and philanthropic funders
  • Support the management and coordination of special events to engage members and cultivate prospective funders

Other: Events, Partnerships, Etc.

  • Manage subscriptions to membership organizations and associations such as the Chamber of Commerce, NYC&Co and Downtown Brooklyn Arts Alliance
  • Oversee and manage graphic design and/or marketing interns
  • Plan and lead tours for press and other PR-related visitors to the Yard
  • Collaborate on executive staff surrogate outreach
  • Maintain mailing lists and create content for e-distribution
  • General support and other tasks as needed

Required Skills and Abilities


  • Direct or indirect experience with writing press releases, pitching stories, and interacting with the press
  • Genuine interest in the mission of BNYDC
  • The ability to communicate clearly – both in meetings and in writing
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a number of projects, while paying close attention to detail
  • Strong computer, internet, research, and database skills
  • Ability to attend events after hours and/or evenings as needed



  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university; master’s degree in related field preferred
  • At least three years of hands-on experience in press, journalism, marketing, communications, fundraising, or related field
  • Experience with marketing, communications, and brand management
  • Experience securing grants and managing grants from corporations and foundations preferred
