BayLegal seeks an advocate with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice advocacy to join our dynamic Legal Advice Line team. The Legal Advice Line team provides immediate legal assistance to low-income individuals and families in the areas of housing, family law, public benefits, and consumer law through our regional hotline. The LAL team play a critical role empowering client with the tools to address their immediate legal needs, identifying systemic issues and patterns and engaging in broader advocacy. Advocates work under the supervision of the Legal Advice Line Managing Attorney. This position is based in Oakland and will focus on eviction prevention, fair housing, and preventing loss of affordable housing. See temporary COVID-19 work.

Compensation and Benefits: We offer a diverse, family friendly environment, and compensation based on competitive public interest salaries along with a generous benefits package. This is a union position (Bay Area Legal Aid Workers “BALAW”), and the salary scale shall be provided upon request.
COVID-19 remote work: BayLegal is committed to the health and safety of our staff, clients, and community. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, most BayLegal employees remain primarily working remotely. BayLegal has implemented detailed health and safety protocols to minimize risk of exposure and has an evolving plan for expanding local receptions hours to the public and increased in-person activities in our offices and community-based advocacy sites. Employees are expected to reside in California and at a distance allowing them to commute to their physical BayLegal base location and service delivery locations as needed and in compliance with public health advisories.
While BayLegal remains primarily remote, all employees are issued BayLegal computers and provided appropriate supplies. BayLegal has implemented and continues to explore additional technologies to make working remotely as efficient and connected as possible. All employees receive a flat-rate monthly amount to reimburse for work-related use of personal IT equipment, including internet, and home. Due to the COVID-19 crisis and its impact on personal lives, BayLegal is open to providing flexibility regarding work schedules to the extent feasible for the position.
