Position Summary:

The IWMF seeks a Director to develop and lead a new multi-year news initiative focused on addressing violence against Native American women and girls in the United States. Focus 326, the initiative’s working title, is a 4-year, $10M news initiative fully funded by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation (HGBF) in partnership with the IWMF to bring awareness to Native American women and girls who have been trafficked, gone missing, been murdered, or are otherwise exploited.

The Director of this initiative will lead the creation of a media ecosystem to enhance reporting on missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) by employing a variety of strategies including: supporting journalists, with a focus on Native journalists, through newsroom partnerships and individual fellowships; making investigative grants and supporting team reporting projects; building resources for journalists to better report on the issue; and supporting the communities impacted by this crisis to transform how they engage with the news media. Reporting produced by this initiative will contribute to a fuller understanding of the scope of the crisis; tell the stories of missing, murdered, and exploited women with dignity and respect; and proactively identify solutions to better address gender-based violence affecting Indigenous women and girls.

The Focus 326 Director will develop the initiative and lead planning and implementation of all aspects of the program.

The Focus 326 Director will hold a leadership role in the organization contributing to all aspects of the organization’s strategy along with its three other directors. They will report to the IWMF’s senior leadership. They will work with an Advisory Committee, which will include members of the IWMF’s Board of Directors, the initiative’s funder, members of Native American communities, and experts on various aspects of this issue.

Primary responsibilities:          

·      Develop, direct and manage the IWMF’s initiative addressing MMIWG in the U.S: 

o  Develop an overall multi-year strategy for the initiative.

o  Create annual work plans and budgets, working closely with the funder as necessary.

o  Liaise with the Advisory Committee, IWMF senior leadership, program funder and other key stakeholders to develop all program elements.

o  Hire and manage a team responsible for implementing programming, including working with current IWMF staff and external consultants.

o  Work closely with the IWMF’s communications team on strategy and material production.

o  Oversee program budget and all reporting requirements to the funder.

·      Lead grantmaking and major media partnerships: 

o  Develop and implement grant-making for content production on MMIWG.

o  Identify and establish high impact media partnerships including grants for investigations, videos, and podcasts.

o  Develop and oversee events planning and community engagement activities tied to media partnerships.

·      Lead development of training and newsroom fellowship programs:

o  Ensuring that Indigenous voices are at the center of IWMF supported narratives on MMIWG, develop programming to provide Indigenous and non-Indigenous journalists with the training, resources, and ongoing support to conduct comprehensive, sustained investigative reporting on the issue.

·      Perform other duties as assigned as appropriate to the needs of the IWMF and its operation.

Qualifications:

Eight to ten years relevant work experience. Knowledge of Indigenous issues, and MMIWG required. Knowledge of journalism and U.S. news industry, experience working with tribal media and Indian Country strongly preferred. Previous grantmaking experience and/or data management experience a plus. Must be eligible to work in the United States. Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
