Stopping Democracy Disinformation Volunteer Coordinator

Salary and Term Info: This is a full-time term-limited position with salary of $50,000- $60,000, contingent upon experience and qualifications. This position will continue until March 1, 2022, but may be extended pending funding.


Position Summary/Objective:

Working with the Common Cause Campaigns team, this position is responsible for managing our nationwide network of nonpartisan grassroots volunteers working to actively identify, track and stop disinformation about key democracy issues (voting rights, a fair census, and others). Disinformation is one of the biggest challenges to Common Cause’s mission to build a bolder and more expansive democracy. Social media has also become more challenging to monitor centrally, as closed-group social networks like WhatsApp and Facebook are now the primary vectors for damaging disinformation. This Coordinator will build a network of grassroots volunteers to monitor social media for disinformation about democracy issues Common Cause is engaged in and promote accurate nonpartisan information.

This position will work to directly implement organizing strategies to understand and stop disinformation as it relates to voting rights, elections and government processes, census and redistricting, and more. This position will report to the VP of Campaigns, and will work closely with our Disinformation Analyst. This position will coordinate with our Communications, Program, Digital, Campaigns and State staff.

Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Recruit, train and manage Social Media Monitoring volunteers to identify mis- and disinformation about key democracy issues online
  • Work with partner organizations to provide strategic advice, training and assistance, including train-the-trainer sessions and helping build volunteer monitoring programs for partners
  • Coordinate the creation and distribution of accurate information that help communities at risk of disinformation protect themselves by using our volunteer capacity, partnerships and Communications and Digital teams.
  • Working with volunteers, ensure our Disinformation Analyst receives examples of disinformation about democracy issues found on the grassroots level, particularly on social media
  • Coordinate with the Disinformation Analyst on tactics to identify relevant disinformation examples and prevent irrelevant examples from cluttering up our process
  • Create volunteer education curriculum and training programs. Provide training and resources to organizers and activists, and work directly with volunteers to engage in social listening for disinformation and amplification of accurate information. Develop processes and protocols for the safety of our volunteers
  • Recruit and train volunteer captains to support and train Social Media Monitoring volunteers.
  • Foster and support volunteer leadership and engagement, including through Common Cause Action Team Slack, one-on-one calls, coordinating briefings, and more
  • Work with specific geographies and/or communities most at risk of adverse effects from democracy disinformation (including, but not limited to: Latinx, Arab American, Black/African American, Native American, Asian American, Youth, Disability, Elderly, Faith Communities and Immigrant Communities) to support existing work in those communities to promote accurate democracy information and combat disinformation
  • Adapt training materials and Stopping Democracy Disinformation programs with partners for key communities.
  • Coordinate with our Communications, State Operations, Campaigns, Litigation and
  • Policy teams to ensure Social Media Monitoring is providing a value-add service to multiple parts of the organization
  • Coordinate with our Media and Democracy team on projects involving social media platform accountability and related policies
  • Conduct outreach to social media influencers directly or through volunteers, staff, other influencers, etc.
  • Track, report and record the metrics, reach and engagement of monitoring, escalation, and inoculation
  • Supervise volunteers and Fellows. 

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience as a volunteer team leader
  • Experience working in distributed organizing in a virtual environment through training, development, and management
  • Ability to recruit, inspire and motivate volunteers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated volunteer management and volunteer leadership development skills
  • Ability to work in close collaboration with others, but also independently, and with remote management and colleagues
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and perform a variety of tasks under tight deadlines, solve problems and prevent them when possible
  • Must be well-organized and attentive to detail

Preferred Competencies and Skills:

  • Organizing experience in a nonprofit setting
  • Knowledge of disinformation landscape and/or democracy reform (voting rights, money in politics, redistricting)
  • Experience working with social media platforms
  • Experience working in coalition with multiple organizations
  • Ability to analyze large amounts of information and content, analyze and create actionable insights

Work Environment: Currently all national Common Cause staff have the option of working remotely/from home. When it becomes safe to work in the office, the person in this role will have the option to work in the D.C. office or remotely. 

Physical Demands: Must be able to withstand working on a computer for prolonged periods.
