Information Technology (IT) Support Specialist

For the past 18 years, the Center for Family Representation (CFR) has served primarily Black and Brown families whose children are at risk of foster care or incarceration, addressing the underlying causes of family instability with attorneys, social workers and parent mentors. We founded CFR with a handful of staff and a $250,000 budget and now serve 2400 clients each year with 120 staff, four office locations, and a budget of over $13 million. 92% of our clients are people of color, a third face criminal charges in addition to child welfare investigations, a fifth have experienced partner violence, 28% identify as non-citizens and a quarter will experience homelessness. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of our service model at preserving family safety and integrity, and at saving millions in reduced foster care costs. Our model is being replicated nationally. CFR works to prevent or minimize the time any child must spend away from family to minimize the harm of separation and the long term, harmful effects of lengthy foster care or incarceration. CFR's early work was in providing holistic and interdisciplinary legal representation to parents facing child welfare investigations and prosecutions for child maltreatment. Over the past four years, we've expanded, and our service model now includes a Juvenile Justice Practice, to represent youth in family and criminal court, and our Home for Good Initiative, which provides interdisciplinary representation to clients in immigration, criminal defense, housing and public benefits advocacy and administrative proceedings to improve our clients' employment opportunities.

CFR has an open position for a full time IT Support Specialist for our offices located in Jamaica Queens. This Specialist will be responsible for providing technical support to all CFR staff and assist in maintaining the company’s computers and network infrastructure. The Specialist will report to and consult with the Director of IT for all issues related to CFR’s IT capabilities, troubleshooting, and future IT improvements.

CFR is seeking a detail-oriented, vigilant, highly productive professional who can work autonomously while also able to work productively with teams of staff, as well as members of CFR’s internal Technology Committee. The ideal candidate will take pride in ensuring continued successful operation of CFR’s IT operations by actively and consistently anticipating problems and maintaining focus on current functioning of CFR’s network, hardware and software. While this person will be based in Queens, s/he should expect to occasionally work in CFR’s Manhattan locations and support both Manhattan and Queens staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot support tickets submitted by staff members to maintain smooth daily operations.
  • Provide technical support both in person (Queens offices) and remotely.
  • Maintaining the computers, copiers, and other technologies on-site in our Queens offices.
  • Train non-technical CFR staff on CFR's information systems.
  • Assist with the installation of new hardware and software.
  • Keep our company intranet page up to date. (Google Sites)
  • Troubleshoot issues within our Public Defense Case Management System.
  • Maintain technical support documentation.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Industry certifications and memberships a plus. (A+, Net+, CCNA...)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively and in a supportive way in a work culture characterized by collaboration and teamwork.
  • Understanding of basic network infrastructure (IP addressing, VLANs, VPNs, Client/Server environments)
  • Understanding of basic scripting (Windows batch / PowerShell)
  • Experience managing:
  • Google Workspace (G Suite)
  • Windows Active Directory
  • VoIP softphone apps
