As Assistant Superintendent, Elementary Schools, you will report to the Deputy Superintendent of Instruction, be a member of the District’s LEAD team and serve as a District leader representing the interests and needs of the schools and school leaders you supervise.  


We expect our Assistant Superintendent, Elementary Schools, will:


Demonstrate a Leadership Mindset

  • Lead a cohort of our Elementary School sites, supervising and actively support the leadership development for elementary school leaders assigned to your cohort. 
  • Provide visible district-level leadership, support, and guidance across all assigned school sites; take part in school community and family engagements; attend instructional leadership team and school site council meetings as appropriate to communicate district priorities.
  • Champion and model school leadership rooted in equity, the belief that all students can learn, and the understanding that we must interrupt inequities to ensure that each and every student receives the quality instruction and equitable support required to thrive in the 21st century


Manage to Results

  • Collaborate with school site leaders and centralized district departments to develop, implement, regularly evaluate, improve, and redesign instructional programs toward increasing student achievement at under-performing schools and closing the achievement and equity gap at all schools.
  • Build a learning, equity, and performance-focused cohort leadership team of principals that regularly engages in authentic collaborative learning to improve their own leadership capacity and success


Manage Teams

  • Develop and implement a strong talent strategy to supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel, including Principals and a Director who reports directly to the Assistant Superintendent
  • Work collaboratively with Principals to ensure that school leaders have strong talent strategies in place designed to help recruit, develop and retain high quality, diverse staff that positively impact student outcomes 


Manage Relationships

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent team (LEAD) and other district leaders to develop differentiated school support plans.
  • Navigate and partner with centralized district departments to resolve issues across school sites, including issues related to student discipline, personnel matters, budget and resources, curriculum design, etc.  
  • Engage with families and local community members to ensure family and student voice is elevated in decision-making 


The strongest candidates will have:


  • Knowledge of San Francisco’s public schools/urban public schools and a passionate belief in SFUSD’s commitment to instructional leadership as a lever toward delivering on the SFUSD Graduate Profile
  • A demonstrated capacity to interrupt systemic barriers to equity and to model equity-centered leadership.
  • A strong record of managing organizational change and initiating key innovations
  • Strong analytic and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as build infrastructure where none exists
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with senior level district staff and colleagues
  • Experience and success with effective written and verbal communication, facilitation and presentations to large groups and a variety of audiences (e.g., staff meetings, executive briefings, public board meetings, memos)
  • Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters


Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid California Administrative Credential or eligibility for a California Administrative Credential
  • A minimum of 5 years as a successful administrator, with no fewer than three of those years as a successful school leader

SFUSD offers a competitive salary of $164,533-205,550 commensurate with experience in a similar position.
