THE ORGANIZATION

Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island. With a membership 23,000 low-income New Yorkers, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant civil rights, language access, TGNCIQ (transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer) justice, public education, and health care access.


MRNY’s programs include:

-ESOL, Spanish-language literacy, and computer literacy, and in-school and after-school youth programs

- Community organizing projects for youth and adults to help New Yorkers to implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation.

-  Direct legal representation in labor and employment law, public benefits, disability benefits, housing law, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration law, public education, and TGNCIQ (trans, gender non-conforming, intersex, queer) civil rights issues.

- Health care navigation, health insurance enrollment, food stamp enrollment and emergency nutrition support


THE DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

MRNY's development department is in charge of meeting the organization's $18+ million annual budget and overseeing its capital campaign to build a new community center. We raise funds from diverse sources, including private and public institutions and individuals at all levels . We work closely with MRNY’s program staff and executive team to accomplish these ambitious fundraising goals and to support the core mission of the organization.


CURRENT OPENING

MRNY seeks a full-time development associate to be directly responsible for timely and thorough administration of public funding and contracts. The associate will also support private foundation fundraising and will assist with other development projects as needed, including a capital campaign to build a new community center. The associate will provide critical support to a rapidly growing organization and will report directly to the associate development director.


This position will run for six months with the possibility of becoming permanent.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

        - Coordinate government agency and member item grant applications ·       

-     Write compelling proposals and reports, track deadlines, and coordinate submissions

·         Provide administrative backup to senior program staff doing fundraising

·         Cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with funders including elected officials and agency leaders

·         Maintain and update government registrations and pre-qualifications, as well as files and database records related to government grant seeking

·         Support the capital project to build a new Queens center by managing government funding related to the project

·         Undertake special projects within the Development Department, such as assisting with the gala and other priority events


REQUIREMENTS:

·         Two to five years of progressively responsible development experience, or related experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization.

·         Ability to write clearly and compellingly for different types of funder audiences using different platforms (social media, emails, long form proposals, etc.)

·         Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to represent the organization to funders as well as interface with all levels of staff while maintaining flexibility, tact, and a positive attitude

·         Be a team player and a self-starter with strong organizational skills and strong attention to detail

 

·         Ability to handle lots of deadlines, prioritize, and complete assignments with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment.

·         Working knowledge of spreadsheets, Microsoft Office suite, and using a database (ideally Salesforce) to run reports.

·         A sense of humor and ability to work under pressure.

·         Ideally, have experience working in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic work environment

·         A commitment to collective action and community organizing

·         Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus
