Introduction: Just Transition Northwest Indiana (JTNWI) is looking for a committed organizer to join our team and gain valuable experience on the frontlines of environmental and climate justice in the Northwest Indiana Region.

About JTNWI: Formed out of years of local organizing, JTNWI was established in Spring 2020. JTNWI is organizing to do the following:

  • build solidarity between communities and workers impacted by the NIPSCO energy transition in Northwest Indiana
  • create long-term, community-centered, and worker-centered solutions
  • address the issue of coal ash pollution and other historical impacts created as a consequence of the fossil fuel industry
  • take legislative action on emerging issues at the local, state, and federal levels.

Job Description: Applicants MUST live in Michigan City or in the Northwest Indiana Region (LaPorte, Porter, Lake, or Jasper Counties).

The Organizer will be responsible for on-the-ground community outreach for primarily the Michigan City, Indiana area, in addition to the larger region. Mileage reimbursement will be made available. Presently, the organizer will not be reporting to an office so work will be done remotely, in addition to some in-person activities.

Organizer responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing organizing strategies and tactics: begins new work with community mapping to understand the characteristics, needs, and dynamics of the communities we organize in and works on a power analysis of our campaign targets
  • Building out a base through recruiting, onboarding, and coaching volunteer leaders
  • Supporting on day-to-day campaign needs, including through our existing Protect Lake Michigan campaign
  • Working on direct outreach to JTNWI supporters through digital, phone banking, and in-person canvassing.
  • Helping to create and maintain content on all social media platforms and manage our digital presence


  • Organizing background (volunteer organizing experience at minimum)
  • Deep commitment to justice and understanding how power, privilege, and oppression manifest at the interpersonal, institutional, and cultural levels
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working within a team, where there is mutual accountability for shared objectives and have the willingness to communicate and receive meaningful feedback
  • Reliable and dependable: must arrive on time to all meetings, events, and activities and have transportation
  • Must be flexible to do in-person activities, in line with social distancing and COVID-19 safety protocols
  • Strong written, phone, and verbal communication and skills
  • Ability to effectively multi-task, manage time and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work autonomously to reach goals
  • Well versed in the major social media platforms, namely Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Experience navigating Google Workspace, Zoom, and other virtual tools
  • Must have reliable transportation

Preferred, but not required:

  • Prior paid organizing experience
  • Associates or Bachelors Degree
  • Fluent in the Spanish Language
