Position Summary:

For over three decades, Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Los Angeles has been the leading legal and civil rights organization for AANHPIs. Advancing Justice-LA seeks an advocate to assist victims of anti-Asian discrimination seek services and redress for their experience. In particular, the Civil Rights Victim’s Advocate will help victims of discrimination by landlords, employers, government officials, and others to access needed services, will gather facts in coordination with attorneys in preparation for litigation on the client’s behalf, and will conduct outreach and education in vulnerable communities to help its members to advocate for themselves and for others.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Screen client intakes who are potential victims of anti-Asian housing discrimination
  • Monitor news media, coalition listservs, and cases from partner organizations for incidences of anti-Asian discrimination and their victims
  • Interview potential victims and gather information on their situation
  • Provide information to clients about available services and referrals
  • Work with department staff to diagnose legal matters, determine appropriate level of action, and provide extensive counsel and/or advice
  • Assist clients in connecting with needed services and provide education for self-advocacy
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with service providers, law enforcement, and private parties
  • Gather information about incidences of anti-Asian discrimination through witness interviews and document collection
  • Manage client cases so as to capture necessary information and identify steps needed to assist client, including informing and assisting attorneys in preparation for litigation or other advocacy
  • Maintain database of collected information and, working with department staff to identify actionable patterns of discrimination
  • Work with regional coalitions addressing to promote fair housing with regard to racial and/or ethnic discrimination
  • Assist in planning and creation of materials for community education
  • Design and create material information AANHPI population of available discrimination-related services
  • Implement and execute outreach efforts in AANHPI community
  • Maintain resources, including protocols, brochures, reference guides and directories
  • Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications:

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required. Master’s degree in social work, marriage & family therapy, or related field a plus.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience involving the provision of victim services, case navigation, or comparable experience working with assisting low-income, and/or limited English proficient clients in obtaining social services or similar public interest services; MSW, MFT, or comparable graduate degree may serve in lieu of experience.

Knowledge and Other Skills:

  • Experience working with and assisting people dealing with emotional trauma and/or personally inflicted social injustice
  • Excellent oral communication and writing skills
  • Excellent organization and record-keeping skills
  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed
  • Demonstrated commitment to civil rights/social justice and community empowerment
  • Access to reliable means of transportation and willingness to travel as needed
  • Experience working collaboratively with multi-ethnic coalitions preferred
  • Familiarity with AANHPI communities preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be creative preferred
