About Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa-USA
When Liberian activist Leymah Gbowee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, she was determined to use her global platform to continue building peace in Liberia and beyond. In 2012, the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa (GPFA) was formed in Liberia to provide outstanding education and leadership opportunities to women and youth as the next generation of peacemakers and democratic leaders. GPFA supports more than 100 Liberian students each year through scholarships and indirectly supports thousands more through its investment in a network of partnership schools across Liberia. Additionally, the foundation strengthens and empowers the feminist peace movement in Liberia through various initiatives and resources.
Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa-USA (GPFA-USA), established as a sister organization to GPFA, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in New York. Its dual mission is to build a global support network for GPFA's programming and to share the teachings of Leymah Gbowee, a lifelong advocate for women's rights and peacebuilding. Since its inception in 2016, GPFA-USA has made significant strides in supporting Liberian development and amplifying Gbowee's message. The organization has raised over $5 million from US individuals and foundations, directing these funds towards education, leadership development, and community programs in Liberia. Additionally, GPFA-USA has played a crucial role in facilitating Leymah Gbowee's advocacy in high-profile international forums, including the UN Secretary General's Sustainable Development Goals Advocates, the G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council, and the World Refugee Council. Through these multifaceted efforts, GPFA-USA continues to extend the impact of Leymah Gbowee's work and contribute to sustainable development in Liberia.
