OVERVIEW OF POSITION: The Organizing Director is primarily responsible for the leadership, management and oversight of the grassroots organizing efforts carried out by Padres & Jóvenes Unidos through its campaigns and organizing committees. As the principal leader for the field work of the organization, the Organizing Director develops, directs, and supports the execution of campaign plans, strategies and tactics to achieve the mission and goals of Padres & Jóvenes Unidos. Padres & Jóvenes Unidos is seeking a tenacious and revolutionary bilingual (Spanish and English) Organizing Director with significant experience in organizational leadership, staff supervision and program management.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Base-Building: 

  • Oversee progress toward recruitment & expansion goals for youth and adult membership bases.
  • Support and supervise youth and adult community organizers in day-to-day organizing work, including: recruitment, development and coordination of trained core of leaders; convening and evaluation of community meetings; setting issue priorities; and conducting effective participatory research and direct action strategies.
  • Convert supporters into PJU members to grow the PJU youth and parent grassroots membership base. Activities include, but are not limited to, one-on-ones, house meetings, follow-up phone calls and chapter and member meetings. 
  • Plan, coordinate and lead membership and community meetings and events. 

Leadership Development: 

  • Train and lead a cadre of parent and/or youth leaders by developing the leadership, organizing skills and political consciousness of members through the execution of leadership development plans. Activities include, but are not limited to, formal and informal group skill-building trainings and political education sessions, one-on-one coaching and mentoring, debriefs and evaluations, and regular field work. 
  • Supervise and develop Denver youth fellows. 
  • Develop curriculum and programming that strategically combines political education, organizing theory and fieldwork. 

Campaign Execution:

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, field organizers, and grassroots leaders, develop, implement and lead strategic organizing campaigns rooted in the needs and demands of the Padres & Jóvenes membership.
  • Actively participate in organizing work by engaging individuals and structures at institutional leadership and policy levels, municipal level leadership and policy makers, and cultivating a visible leadership presence amongst the grassroots members of the organization.
  • Manage accountabilities for follow through on regular and timely reporting and data collection systems by the organizing cadre to ensure that all members of Padres & Jóvenes Unidos team have up to date access to current information on organizing efforts, operating environment for the work, concerns of members and staff and critical issues regarding campaigns.
  • Execute strategies and tactics to move campaigns forward and win demands. Activities include, but are not limited to, campaign planning, power analysis, participatory action research, data analysis, turnout and mobilization, direct actions, accountability meetings, media interviews, etc.

United Front: 

  • Form strategic alliances with local, state and national allies, partner organizations, elected officials and institutions. 
  • Represent PJU during local, state and national coalition and alliance meetings, calls, events and gatherings. 
  • Develop and manage key relationships with school administrators, staff and teachers, as well as district representatives. 
  • Represent PJU in the broader community and contribute to local movement building efforts.
  • As needed, participate in ally events and activities. 

REQUIREMENTS: 

Experience: The ideal candidate will share a commitment to the organization's mission and have at least 3 years experience in management level positions (including supervision) and 7 years minimum in grassroots organizing. Understanding of adult learning processes and experience providing formal training and on-the-job mentoring.

Leadership Ability: Self-motivation, taking initiative, and ability to manage multiple projects are critical. This position is one of motivating, mentoring and supporting others to develop their own skills and leadership. Ability to work well as part of a team and contribute to our diverse, community-based organization. Management/supervisory experience is preferable.

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact with persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds and foster productive relationships in a multi-cultural context. Understanding and awareness of race, class, and gender issues and. Skill in negotiating, exchanging ideas, opinions, and conflict resolution to formulate common vision and work together effectively.

Other skills: Proficiency with word-processing, data base and e-mail important. The candidate must be detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines. Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
