Safe and Just Cleaners Campaign Associate

Make the Road New York builds the power of Latino and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road NY operates neighbourhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island, Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester. With a membership of more than 24,000 low-income New Yorkers, Make the Road tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.

Brief Description of the Safe and Just Cleaners Research Project:

The Safe and Just Cleaners Study is a community-based participatory research partnership funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The study is collecting data on domestic cleaners’ chemical exposures and other working conditions to develop safer cleaning approaches to reduce exposure for cleaners and their clients. The project is a partnership with the Barry Commoner Center at Queens College, CUNY and the Selikoff Center for Occupational Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Lead Safe and Just cleaners campaigns at the local, state and federal level.
  • Build and sustain coalition efforts on these campaigns with key partners and stakeholders.
  • Create leadership development and political education workshops and training for household cleaners
  • Develop leader facilitation skills to lead meetings, workshops, and actions.
  • Promote household cleaners participation in campaign activities and help develop their leadership 
  • Creates and manages email blasts, online petitions, and social media advertising campaigns and update project website
  • Collaborate with the implementation of a digital strategy for the Safe and Just Cleaners Project, in coordination with research partners.
  • Represent the Safe and Just Cleaners campaign in press communications 
  • Coordinate with Safe and Just Cleaners Outreach Specialist to set up outreach strategies and goals for campaign activities.
  • Assist in recruitment and direct outreach to Super Cleaners activities
  • Contribute to reports and other correspondence with project grantor(s);
  • Report back periodically to research partners, as needed.
  • Work closely and report to the Workers Health and Safety Supervisor to set clear goals, benchmarks, deadlines, and assessment tools.
  • Assist the work of the broader Safe and Just Cleaners Project and Workers Health and Safety program as needed.
  • Provide support as needed to other health campaigns and projects.

Qualifications:

  • Eligible to work in the US
  • One to three years of campaign coordination experience;
  • Organizing experience and demonstrated commitment to social justice and interest in building a grassroots movement with community organizations;
  • Experience collaborating with community organizers;
  • While the position is based in our Queens office, the applicant must be willing to travel to our offices in Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and Staten Island. (This will apply when activities in person are re-open)
  • Previous experience with occupational safety and health, environmental health and/or public health policy preferred but not required
  • Must be fluent in English and Spanish (written and spoken) 
  • Strong command of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube and familiarity with Word Press;
  • Familiarity with Facebook and Twitter social media campaigns;
  • Strong command of Microsoft Word, Excel, Dropbox, and PowerPoint

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team, proven ability to problem-solve, and engage in positive conflict resolution and constructive solution-oriented conversation;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, writing, and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while moving work forward in strategic and efficient ways as well as identifying when guidance/support is needed;
  • Knowledge of community-based participatory research preferred;
  • Be able to work some evenings and possibly some weekends;
