The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is a dynamic organization at the University of Washington. Its mission is to monitor global health conditions and health systems, as well as to evaluate interventions, initiatives, and reforms. It is building an audience of interested policymakers, researchers, donors, and other decision-makers in health who are interested in learning more about how to apply, use, and derive better evidence in global health.

IHME has established international scientific credibility for developing innovative multidisciplinary methods and producing cutting-edge results. IHME aims to be nimble and entrepreneurial in its work, taking on daunting analytic challenges in order to provide critical information that can help answer big-picture questions at the most local level possible. We accomplish these aims by working with a range of collaborators across the world. Currently, we engage with more than 3,400 collaborators from more than 140 countries.

IHME has an exciting opportunity for an Engagement Coordinator to join our team. The primary purpose of this position will be to engage with and manage a diverse community of collaborators who are interested in understanding and using IHME’s findings on population health. The individual in this position will become familiar with IHME’s research agenda, and help to expand IHME’s impact by providing support and direction to the network of collaborators by providing membership planning, communications support, logistical and coordination support, and customer service. A successful candidate will have excellent written and spoken communication skills and an ability to interface directly with a wide variety of individuals. Overall, the Engagement Coordinator will be a critical member of an agile, dynamic team.

Collaborators will include multilaterals, international NGOs, country governments, research institutions, members of the media, the private sector, health administrators, and other health decision-makers and policy influencers that will use IHME’s findings to inform policy discussions, improve program design, and allocate resources. This position will focus mainly on topics related to the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD), Injuries and Risk factors enterprise, and affiliated research projects including the Local Burden of Disease project. This is an exciting time for an engagement professional to join the organization, as the GBD Collaborative Network has more than doubled in the past two years, and will continue to grow. This position is contingent on project need and funding availability.

Responsibilities include:

Knowledge Command

·      Learn and understand the key concepts, goals, and results of IHME’s work, particularly the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study. Become articulate about results, key messages, and future implications.

·      Work with IHME researchers to understand findings, developments, and future directions of research

·      Develop familiarity with key stakeholders and stakeholder networks, including their political, intellectual, and financial context and interrelationships as it relates to health.

·      Summarize complex scientific results, concepts, and implications proficiently into materials and explanations to external stakeholders.


Collaborative Network Management

Overall strategy

o  Assist in the development and implementation of the Network membership plan, including facilitating opportunities for Collaborators to participate in all stages of the research, supporting recruitment and retention, monitoring Collaborator engagement, and managing growth of the Network.



o  Conduct research and identify individuals for recruitment efforts that will expand the collaborative network.

o  Prepare recruitment materials including letters of invitation, presentations, and other collateral as needed.

o  Identify opportunities to promote the GBD Collaborative Network via partners, affiliated groups, or others.

o  Manage the collaborator enrollment process including maintaining the open call, intaking applications, orienting collaborators, and providing proof of membership upon request.


o  Facilitate collaborator involvement in research, publication, and policy impact activities and offerings for the GBD Collaborative Network and other stakeholder groups as needed.

o  Develop and maintain an annual calendar of engagement activities, being responsive to changes to institutional timelines as they occur.

o  Coordinate requests for and review of Collaborator feedback on data, methods, results, and publications.

o  Triage, resolve, and respond to requests from collaborators and external stakeholders. Identify relevant results and materials to provide resources to collaborators who make requests. Must be able to translate broad or general requests into specific materials and responses.

o  Provide support to staff and faculty in creating materials to help stakeholders understand and communicate about results, including presentations, briefings, manuals, and other collateral.

o  Organize, schedule, and provide administrative support for faculty and staff members conducting webinars, meetings, and calls with collaborators around the world.

o  Oversee the public-facing calendar of key dates for the GBD Study and update it regularly. Must be able to gather information proactively from key faculty and staff in order to coordinate communications and respond to schedule changes in a fast-paced environment.



o  Oversee customer service processes and systems to ensure collaborators are satisfied.

o  Create, plan, and deliver opportunities to solicit collaborator feedback, including routine satisfaction surveys.

o  Work with internal staff and faculty to provide engagement opportunities as committed in order to ensure collaborator satisfaction.

o  Manage all collaborator renewal activities and communications.



o  Contribute to maintaining an accurate, real-time collaborator database in Salesforce CRM, including updating records, creating reports, and tracking outcomes.

o  Learn and utilize Salesforce CRM in order to monitor collaborator activities, trends, leads, and results and make recommendations based on learnings.

o  Identify and communicate database feature needs in order to build custom reports and capture key metrics for routine reporting and to advise strategic planning efforts.


External Communications

·      Craft professional and concise correspondence to collaborators and external stakeholders. 

·      Utilize excellent judgment and tact in responding to a wide range of inquiries.

·      Develop clear and diplomatic messaging strategies to inform collaborators of progress and developments within the study.

·      Manage key communication channels and correspondence from collaborators. Route and respond to questions and requests, ensuring timely response for all inquiries. Field requests to staff and faculty as appropriate.

·      Provide logistical and communications support to organized media or stakeholder campaigns regarding papers, press briefings, and conferences, or related activities as needed.

·      Write, edit, and improve upon web-based materials available to external stakeholders and individuals in the collaborator network.


Other Responsibilities

·      Provide support to events, media campaigns, and related activities in regards to the collaborator network as needed. Assist with travel arrangements and expense reports.

·      Prepare and edit briefings on key topics. Conduct background research on individuals to inform engagement as necessary.

·      Develop standard templates of responses and information packets as a resource to internal staff when interacting with members of the collaborative network.

·      Provide support to paper production, fact checking, and other activities as needed.


·      Bachelor’s degree

·      2+ years related experience or combination of education and experience.

·      Must exhibit strong desire and ability to learn new intellectual and scientific content across different disciplines in a timely fashion.

·      Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and data presentation skills.

·      Demonstrated relationship management experience required.

·      Ability to adapt rapidly to different social and intellectual contexts. Must be able to sense organizational norms in a variety of different settings – including local governments, donor organizations, and international organizations – and carry out communications and relationship management in accord with them. 

·      Demonstrated skill at translating information and utilizing language that resonates with different audiences.

·      Excellent interpersonal skills; a cooperative team player, energetic, able to develop productive relationships with colleagues and external collaborators.

·      Demonstrated ability to be proactive, organized, and logical while solving complex problems in a fast-paced environment with incomplete information.

·      Track record for being detail-oriented with a demonstrated ability to self-motivate and follow through on projects

·      Incumbent must be able to work independently, be flexible, and juggle competing priorities.

·      Professional maturity, with an ability to work both independently and collaboratively to achieve objectives.
