The Institute of Current World Affairs (ICWA) advances American understanding of international cultures and affairs by sending outstanding young professionals abroad on two-year  independent writing fellowships to study countries, regions and globally important issues. Our alumni have become some of this country’s leading journalists, scholars, diplomats, activists and businesspeople. ICWA nurtures the kind of deep understanding future generations will need to ensure America’s role in the world is informed by wisdom, foresight and compassion.

The Manager of Operations manages the institute’s finances and administration, working closely with the Executive Director to oversee fellowship logistics, and coordinate meetings and events. Additional duties include development support and communications. Ideal candidates will enjoy having a diverse range of responsibilities, take initiative in helping build our outreach and have strong writing and copyediting skills.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the duties of the Manager of Operations include:

 Program

 • Oversee all administrative, legal, insurance, and financial aspects of the ICWA fellowship program

 • Manage fellowship application process and timeline

 • Coordinate the launch and recovery of fellows

 • Support fellow experience

 • Support social media outreach, marketing and website maintenance

 • Direct all meeting and event planning, in-person and virtual

 • Maintain annual ICWA calendar of events

 Development

 • Coordinate general fundraising activities with the Development Director and Executive Director

 • Assist with overall development calendar ensuring deadlines and goals are being met

 • Help maintain a general development prospect database

 • Provide general development assistance in the form of document creation and preparation

 • Work with the Development Director coordinating and executing development campaigns and projects

 • Assist in the preparation of development materials for meetings, fundraisers and donor/prospect events

 Financial

 • Administer all financial matters of the foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization

 • Serve as the principal staff liaison to the Finance Committee and attend committee meetings

 • Manage annual budget preparation in coordination with the Executive Director and Treasurer

 • Oversee and support bookkeeper

 • Perform light bookkeeping tasks and report generating (QuickBooks)

 • Reconcile donations between the general ledger and development database

 • Review and approve all invoices and timesheets for payment

 Additional Information

 ICWA is a small non-profit with a two-person office located in Washington, DC. The Operations Manager position is mainly administrative with a salary range of $60K - $80K (depending on qualifications and experience) plus health insurance and retirement benefits. The position will be temporarily remote due to the pandemic but eventually required to be in-person in the office.
