Position: Associate, Internships and Career Success

Reports to: Assistant Director of Internships and Career Success

Status: Full-time Exempt

The Opportunity

The Internships and Career Success department is looking for a dynamic and driven individual to join our team as an Internships and Career Success Associate. We are looking for a candidate who brings relevant skills and interest to the role, maturity, and ownership of their work, and is looking for an opportunity to seize a career-enhancing opportunity in a fast-paced, growing organization.

The Associate will report to the Assistant Director of Internships and Career Success and work collaboratively with the OppNet Fellows team to manage existing and generate new employer and enrichment partner relationships. The Associate will support in relationship management and business development of corporate internship partners. The person will also assist the team with placing both high school and college Fellows in summer internship and enrichment opportunities and develop and deliver innovative and culturally competent career readiness programming.

The Organization

Since 2003, The Opportunity Network has ignited the drive, curiosity, and agency of students from historically and systematically underrepresented communities to connect them to college access and success, internships, career opportunities, and personal and professional networks. Our two core programs, OppNet Fellows and Career Fluency® Partnerships, are anchored in our proprietary Career Fluency® curriculum, which articulates the necessary skills and mindsets for college and career readiness. All of the work OppNet leads is in service of realizing our vision of a nation connected through vibrant communities and networks actively in pursuit of social justice and educational equity – a nation where all young people can freely create their own path to enduring success that honors their passions, ambitions, and full identities.

The Person

The ideal candidate will be a strategic and driven individual with a passion for advancing educational, racial, and social equity. A professional with two to three years of applied experience, the ideal candidate will be someone who enjoys cultivating and maintaining business relationships and partnerships to generate meaningful career opportunities for OppNet Fellows. The candidate must also balance working collaboratively and productively with colleagues across the Career Success team and broader organization with the ability to work independently with focus and a drive for quality. The ideal candidate will also personally connect to the important work we do, value diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) across the organization, and align themselves with and channel OppNet’s core values in all aspects of their work. The candidate will demonstrate DE&I values by actively participating in all organizational-wide learning sessions and self-reflection as well as working with others to enact changes that contribute to meeting the organization’s DE&I goals.

Responsibilities

Employer & Enrichment Partner Outreach - (35%)

  • Work with the Assistant Director of Career Success to identify and secure new internship and enrichment partners for high school and college Fellows
  • Build, track, and maintain a pipeline of college and high school internship and enrichment partners
  • Manage a caseload of existing and new employer and enrichment partner relationships
  • Assess employer and enrichment partner needs and work with the Internships & Career Success team to find “best fit” student Fellows for summer and academic year opportunities
  • Conduct in-person and virtual check ins with employer partners over the summer to track student progress
  • Enhance, facilitate, and customize existing employer training workshops for internship and corporate partners
  • Collect intern evaluation survey data from employer partners

Internships and Enrichment Placement (35%)

  • Facilitate best fit placement of college Fellows into summer opportunities, including student outreach, coaching, and liaising between partners and Fellows
  • Collaborate with the Internships and Career Success team to review data from college Fellows to begin targeting Fellows for potential summer opportunities
  • Track student applications and outcomes in Salesforce database on a consistent basis
  • Assist high school students with enrichment and internship applications, includes reviewing application essays, materials and ensuring Fellows meet application deadlines
  • Manage communication process with Fellows to ensure they are effectively moving through the application process and deadlines
  • Collaborate and communicate with the College Success department to inform curricular and programmatic changes within the Career Success department
  • Review college and high school Fellow resumes and manage the resume submission process
  • Conduct individual check-ins with college students interns during winter break to provide guidance regarding future career plans and prospective internships
  • Manage intern check-in process via phone, email and in-person during the summer

Program Management - (15%)

  • Facilitate culturally competent career readiness programming for high school and college Fellows
  • Become proficient in existing outcomes measurement tools, including surveys, rubrics, and OppNet’s proprietary Career Fluency® Competency Model
  • Support the Assistant Director in working with OppNet’s communications team develop and enhance marketing and outreach collateral as well as compelling proposals and pitch materials
  • Collaborate with the OppNet Fellows program team to design and deliver high quality and high impact career development events for Fellows and partners
  • Manage OppNet’s Internships Board, to inform and promote internship and career opportunities with Fellows
  • Generate quarterly dashboards and reports to show progress and demonstrate outcomes
  • Conduct in-person and virtual check ins with employer partners over the summer to track student progress

Overall Program Assistance - (15%)

  • Participate in Career Fluency facilitation training
  • Assist with facilitation for annual intensives and special events as needed, e.g. summer institute, college application boot camp, and college transition boot camp, speed networking, career fluency panels,
  • Lead recruitment visits/information sessions at area high schools and interview prospective Fellows

Qualifications

  • B.A. from a U.S. accredited college or university;
  • Two to three years of youth development and/or career development experience;
  • Availability and willingness to work select evenings and some weekends;
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with high school and college-level students from historically underserved and underrepresented communities: Can help facilitate interactive workshops in rigorous but dynamic fashion; understands how to be both nurturing and demanding; appreciates boundaries, but not afraid to push or challenge;
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations and confidential information with maturity and discretion
  • Experience and proficiency with Salesforce, or a similar database system; FormAssembly is a plus;
  • Demonstrated skill set in project management, including:
  • ability to keep a project moving toward successful completion
  • awareness of budget parameters
  • ability to set and meet deadlines
  • understands how metrics and competencies are connected to various projects
  • effective cross-departmental communication

  • Previous experience in career development with college and high school students;
  • Relationship management skills - specifically with employer partners;
  • Strong New York networks and knowledge of emerging career/industry trends;
  • High comfort level in meeting priorities for multiple stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated competency in data-informed practices;
  • Demonstrated alignment with OppNet’s mission, vision, and core values in diversity, equity, and inclusion;
