The Bowery Mission is a holistic, Christian faith-based organization dedicated to serving people who are experiencing homelessness. The Volunteer Services team provides critical support across the organization with the help of approximately 16,000 volunteers each year. The Senior Manager, Volunteer Services will develop and execute a strategic plan which reflects organizational priorities and enhances the effectiveness of the Volunteer Services department. This role will be primarily based on site at our Tribeca Campus but will require travel to other program sites to ensure the effective oversight of our volunteer program.

 The Senior Manager, Volunteer Services will lead, design, plan, and direct a volunteer program to support the Mission’s programs and augment the services of staff. This includes an annual plan for recruitment, training, retention and recognition of volunteers across all Bowery Mission sites; overseeing and maintaining volunteer scheduling and database technology; and actively collaborating with Development Team Caseload Managers and Program staff to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for donors and prospects that lead to deeper engagement with The Bowery Mission. The Senior Manager, Volunteer Services supervises a team of Volunteer Coordinators to accomplish these goals.

Reports to: Chief Development Officer

Specific responsibilities (in addition to those noted above) include but are not limited to:

  1. Meet regularly with Program leaders to understand the full scope of volunteer needs and opportunities across sites and implement volunteer recruiting strategies to maximize program impact.
  2. Manage a variety of internal and external stakeholder relationships.
  3. Develop and implement appropriate recognition strategies to deepen volunteer engagement.
  4. Develop and implement an internal and external communications plan for Volunteer Services.
  5. Seek to continually improve the volunteer experience through ongoing evaluation and implement changes as necessary.
  6. Collaborate closely with Caseload Managers to introduce volunteers who express interest to become more involved.
  7. Oversee volunteer management system, Volunteer Hub.
  8. Manage and achieve annual revenue and expense goals.

Requirements:

  1. Embraces the organization’s Statement of Faith
  2. Bachelor’s degree
  3. High integrity that builds trust with internal and external stakeholders
  4. Ability to build positive relations across internal teams to meet organizational objectives
  5. Prior experience and demonstrated success in volunteer management and leading teams with organizational-wide impact
  6. Demonstrated ability to think strategically and implement new programs and initiatives to increase effectiveness and efficiencies
  7. Experience in developing strategic plans and executing to completion
  8. Proven experience in project management
  9. Excellent customer service skills and a genuine desire to engage deeply with supporters from a diversity of backgrounds
  10. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced environment, manage competing priorities against deadlines and creatively problem-solve
  11. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communications skills
  12. High proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  13. Knowledge of Raisers Edge and/or Volunteer Hub a plus
  14. Available to work on Thanksgiving Day and during Thanksgiving Week
