Friends Community School (FCS) is seeking an exceptional educational leader to become its next Head of School beginning July 1, 2019. FCS is an independent, coeducational day school offering Quaker progressive education for students in kindergarten through grade eight. Founded in 1986 by members of the Adelphi Friends Meeting, FCS is located in a LEED Silver-certified building on 17 acres adjacent to Greenbelt National Park in College Park, Maryland and draws families from a wide swath of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The School offers a rigorous curriculum rooted in its Quaker heritage that imbues the values of equality, simplicity, integrity, and environmental stewardship. FCS’s educational approach emphasizes hands-on experience through activities, field trips, projects, and collaborations that provide opportunities for decision-making, individual responsibility, and leadership. The FCS mission statement, “To nurture young people to be lifelong learners, courageous risk takers, and joyous peacemakers; to discover that of God within themselves and others; and to reach their fullest potential as individuals and as contributing members of society” is understood, embraced, and celebrated throughout the school community. Currently, FCS is in a strong, stable position with full enrollment at 240 students, an experienced and collaborative faculty and staff, and an effective and engaged Board of Trustees.
The next Head of FCS will be a visionary leader, able to craft and articulate a vision for the school’s future and then realize it. Our next Head will have a deep knowledge of Quaker practice and values as they are manifest in a school setting, experience delivering progressive curricula and programs that embrace the education of the “whole child,” and a strong commitment to the benefits of a K-8 school model. They will be an outstanding communicator who seeks out and delights in frequent interactions with children, and is equally comfortable communicating (verbally and in writing) with faculty and staff, parents, the Board of Trustees, community members, and other educators. Our next Head will be an experienced, engaged, and supportive manager/supervisor who is able to hire, orient, mentor, support, develop, and evaluate an exceptional faculty and staff. FCS is a culturally and economically diverse community that endeavors to consistently grow in our ability to be inclusive, relevant, and responsive. Therefore our next Head will be highly culturally competent with a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. As FCS continues to strengthen and develop, the next Head will lead the way with visionary financial management and effective fundraising.
