About the Organization

The mission of Apex for Youth is to deliver possibilities to underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-­income families in NYC. Apex serves students from pre-K to 12th grade in New York City through educational, after-school, athletic, and middle school/high school mentoring programs. 

We provide youth with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors, tutors, and coaches. Ultimately, Apex for Youth aims to nurture youth who will be confident, college and career-ready individuals who are actively engaged in their community.

Apex’s Athletics Programs addresses the physical and social-emotional needs of elementary students through athletics programs run by caring adult volunteers. Athletics programming for Elementary school students takes place on Saturdays from October - June. Athletics programming for Elementary and Middle School is offered to participants during July - August students through Apex’s annual We Run as One summer league.

The Athletics Program Coordinator will report to the Program Manager of Athletics Programs. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in working with elementary aged youth, excellent program management skills, and experience designing and leading programming.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise volunteers, address behavioral issues with students, and support on-site logistics at weekly Saturday sessions in Chinatown and Lower Manhattan partner sites;
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with all partner schools and related organizations;
  • Support Athletics & Elementary team program managers with curriculum development, volunteer orientations and trainings;
  • Assist with coordination and organization of Apex’s annual We Run As One (WRAO) summer basketball league in July - August;
  • Assist with the recruitment, intake and training process for volunteers to ensure quality interactions between volunteers and youth with the support of the Elementary program managers;
  • Communicate with parents/guardians and volunteers to monitor students’ performance and progress throughout program;
  • Prepare materials and supplies for Saturday sessions; 
  • Help collect and analyze program data with support of program managers and Data Analyst;
  • Attend all program and team meetings, as necessary;
  • Support Elementary, Middle School, and High School Programs teams and complete duties, as necessary;
  • Assist with Apex organizational events and initiatives, as necessary.


CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS 

  • BA or BS required;
  • 1-2 years experience working with youth or in an educational or athletics setting preferred;
  • Proficiency in Mandarin or Spanish a plus; 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with ability to create genuine relationships;
  • Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail;
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned responsibilities;
  • Positive and bright disposition with “can do” attitude;
  • Proactive nature and self starter, ability to problem-solve autonomously;
  • Ability to work on Saturdays on-site in Manhattan and take Sunday-Monday as the weekend.

Additional vacation days accrue according to years worked in the organization.
