Washington English Center is a 501(C)3 nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC. It was founded in 1993 and its mission is to provide excellent and affordable English classes and other workforce programs to adult immigrants using volunteer teachers.

The Volunteer Manager is a full-time position responsible for the execution of all duties related to the recruitment, screening, placement, and oversight of volunteers for teaching, tutoring, and other volunteer roles, under the supervision of the Director of Academic Programs. The typical schedule is Monday-Thursday, 9am-5pm, plus eight flex hours that will switch between Fridays, evenings, and weekends as needed.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the recruitment, screening, placement, and coordination of volunteers in their teaching, tutoring, administrative work, and in other volunteer needs as they emerge
  • Manage absence information and sub requests as needed
  • Work with the Director of Academic Programs to execute policies and initiatives to attract and maintain a diverse volunteer pool
  • Maintain volunteer database and email distribution lists
  • Maintain consistent communication with volunteers through regular, timely emails and phone calls and check-in before designated classes
  • Create and send a weekly newsletter to the volunteer base
  • Provide support to volunteers and receive program feedback, particularly during fast-paced times directly before and after classes
  • Work with the Director of Academic Programs to organize volunteer appreciation events and initiatives 
  • Assist the Director of Academic Programs in preparing reports regarding volunteer recruitment, retention, satisfaction, and other topics as needed
  • Assist the Director of Academic Programs in organizing volunteer training sessions and graduations
  • Attend community events and meetings, including volunteer recruitment events
  • Participate in professional development activities, including ESOL and volunteer management topics
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Volunteer management experience
  • Extremely high organizational skills, ability to multitask, and ability to prioritize
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills to foster collaboration and collegiality in the office environment and with volunteers
  • Strong computer skills and ability to navigate through Microsoft Office programs and Google suite
  • Some evening and weekend availability

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Non-profit work experience
  • Certificate or degree in education, TESOL, or related field
  • Proficiency in Spanish or another language in addition to English
