Description

Starting in late August / early September: HCA is excited to announce the opening of a Program Assistant position (7 hrs/wk) in our affordable housing nonprofit’s Los Angeles-based Resident Services Department! This is a great opportunity to dip your toes in teaching at a stable nonprofit with potential for growth down the road...

Our Resident Services Department is responsible for providing low-income folks of all ages who reside in our apartment portfolio with educational classes and resources to improve their quality of life and build better communities.

To start, the Program Assistant will support the Program Coordinator in delivering on-site educational classes for low-income kiddos at a select number of affordable apartment communities (see below). Over time, the Program Assistant may be asked to teach classes her/himself during days when the Program Coordinator is out of the office, and/or to assist in teaching classes to low-income senior citizens at additional communities.

About this Position

The Program Assistant currently supports an HCA Program Coordinator in teaching afterschool programming to a small group of elementary and middle school aged youth at four apartment communities in the West LA, Jefferson, South Figueroa Corridor, and Inglewood neighborhoods. The schedule and locations are as follows:

  • Mondays, 4-5pm at Missouri Place: 11998 Missouri Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90025
  • Tuesdays, 3-5pm at Jefferson Square: 2401 W Jefferson Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90018
  • Wednesdays, 3-5pm at Beach Terrace: 716 West Beach Ave, Inglewood, CA 90302
  • Thursdays, 3-5pm at Gilbert Lindsay: 601 W 40th Pl, Los Angeles, CA 90037

After-school programming currently consists of cooking and baking classes focused on simple and healthy meals for the whole family and guided painting classes. These subjects have proven to be relatively popular but could change with time to other areas of enrichment interest.

Programming must be provided to residents only, be on-site in the generously resourced Community Room of each building and be free of cost to resident attendees. This makes for a uniquely informal, almost semi-private teaching environment ranging in attendance from 3 to 10 students max at each location.

Requirements

  • You enjoy working with humans, especially children
  • Cooking, baking, and painting sound like FUN to you. All things with a recreational, summer-camp vibe fire you up!
  • You are sensitive to the socio-economic and cultural contexts in which we work: residents from racial, ethnic or religious minorities, residents for whom English is a second language, single-parent households, etc
  • You have a great sense of humor and aren’t afraid to laugh at yourself
  • You understand that we are here to serve residents where they are (not the other way around)
  • You are resilient: emotionally challenging or politically incorrect situations do not deter you from our mission
  • You have reliable transportation to get to and from the apartment communities where you will assist in teaching

Driving & Parking

We understand that our programs end during peak traffic times. For this reason, we ask that applicants live or have other life commitments in/close to the 90025, 90018, 90302 and/or 90037 zip codes.

Parking spaces in the buildings can be very limited, so the Program Assistant will need to be comfortable finding street parking in the adjacent neighborhoods of each above-listed community.

Pay

$50/hour for 7 hours/week. This rate is set to consider the expense of driving to and from the various apartment communities.
