Position Summary: 

Pike Market Food Bank seeks a caring, skilled Client Service Specialist to join us in providing food access to the dynamic and diverse downtown community. This is a direct service position, distributing groceries to 800-1,200 clients weekly, as part of a team of dedicated staff and volunteers. The position requires experience in, and a passion for, serving a population facing homelessness, poverty, and associated risks, including mental illness, chronic health issues, and substance use disorders. The Client Service Specialist will contribute to daily operations of the food bank, as well as participating in the ongoing work of striving for equity and justice in our workplace and our community.

An outstanding candidate will have:

·      At least one years’ experience working in a shelter, day center, or similar environment.

·      Demonstrated skill in deescalating conflicts and disruptive behavior.

·      A calm and confident demeanor.

·      Excellent interpersonal- and verbal communication skills.

·      Affinity for a fast-paced, high client-volume environment, and physically active work style.

Typical schedule is 8:30am - 4pm, except Wednesdays, which are 12p-7:30p.

 

Essential Job Duties: 

·      Offer and pack groceries for clients.

·      Greet and welcome clients to the food bank.

·      Monitor food bank waiting- and service-areas, ensuring safety of clients and observation of all Food Bank rules and policies.

·      Check clients into the online system and enforce shopping policies.

·      Observe client behaviors in the food bank service area, and intervene when necessary to assist clients and discourage disruptive behaviors.

·      Consult with other staff and/or outside agencies as needed regarding client issues and needs.

·      Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers during shift.

·      Assist with setup and cleanup of distribution services.

·      Maintain order and cleanliness of work area, abide by safe food handling practices and regulations.

·      Assist with home deliveries as needed.

·      Monitor and maintain no-cook inventory.

·      Assess and advise on policies regarding no-cook offerings for homeless/marginally housed clients.

·      Other duties as assigned.

 

Work environment

Typically indoors in a warehouse and outdoors in a covered parking garage

Physical demands

·      Prolonged periods standing and walking for almost entire shift

·      Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds for every client served

 

Required skills / abilities 

·     At least one year of experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and/or chemical dependency issues.

·      Experience in direct customer/client service.

·      Demonstrated ability to work effectively with clients displaying a wide range of behavior, including that which may be unpleasant/undesirable.

·      Demonstrated ability to have positive interpersonal interactions in a fast pace environment, with a demanding and diverse population; ability to de-escalate situations involving inappropriate/problematic behaviors.

·      Ability to act calmly and compassionately when challenged.

·      Ability to communicate expectations and clearly, and to enforce rules and policies fairly.

·      Philosophy of respect and dignity for clients, and commitment to food access.

 

Preferred Qualifications

·      Knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following areas: chronic homelessness, engagement strategies, crisis intervention, de-escalation.

·      Social work/mental health-related Bachelor’s degree.
