OVERVIEW:


As a member of the National Information Technology team, the Director of Business Intelligence (BI) manages and executes Year Up's data analytics vision and strategy to support the organization's adoption and execution of data-driven decision-making. This includes management of the technology portfolio that enables analysts across every business group.

The Director of BI will partner with analysts and leaders across the organization to assess and determine priorities and facilitate delivery; this may take the form of direct BI production or the provision of technological and consultative support. They will participate in strategic planning with focus on technology initiatives supporting Year Up's strategic objectives. The Director of BI will also drive continuous process and solutions improvements for the organization as a whole, including serving as an architect and decision-maker on Year Up's Architecture Review Board.

As part of their work, the Director of Business Intelligence will also have the opportunity to interact with students as a mentor, group facilitator, and advocate, participating in Year Up's mission.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Relationship & Vendor Management

  • Manage and deepen relationships with analytical stakeholders across the organization to establish overarching need, identify cross-functional opportunities and drive utilization of the YU BI technology stack
  • Promote empirical decision-making as an evangelist for data-driven decision-making
  • Initiate and manage vendor relationships and establishes requirements for solutions and services
  • Ensure all partner needs are met and/or issues are resolved or addressed; work with business stakeholders to prioritize bugs and enhancements as needed


Solution Delivery

  • In partnership with IT leadership team, responsible for strategic delivery of Year Up's BI technology stack:
  • Software acquisitions, engineering and architecture for data warehousing solutions
  • Establishment of pipelines and extractions to increase pool of available analytical data
  • Implementation and oversight of analytical platforms and capabilities - such as dashboarding and reporting tools
  • Delivery of analytical products - such as dashboards, reports, utilities and automations
  • Define and deliver system architecture to support data processing and advanced analytics such as machine learning
  • Oversee implementation and execution of data integrations in collaboration with other Year Up architects
  • Collect and analyze business requirements, procedures, and issues; use them to design and implement innovative solutions
  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of technology solutions, platforms, and interface to support Year Up analytical stakeholders
  • Research and recommend new technologies and brings external information, ideas, and expertise back to the business group and/or organization as a whole
  • Formulate resourcing and budgetary recommendations according to business group requirements and finance guidelines; accountable for the financial management/budgeting process for assigned portfolio and related projects
  • Effectively use formal methods (waterfall, iterative, agile) for delivering new or enhanced solutions; consult on, evaluate, and select most effective methodology per initiative, identifying process improvements


Portfolio Management

  • Promote standardization of Year Up data consumption and analysis, including driving construction of data dictionaries, and defining and implementing approach to data quality
  • Partner with Senior Director Application Enablement to articulate roadmap to ensure execution against analytics strategy, including technology application recommendations, BI role and team design recommendations, and capabilities and platform rollouts
  • Responsible for overseeing budget for BI team, including technology acquisitions, licenses, staff and consulting engagements
  • Provide business process guidance; collaborate with business group leadership to document "Current State" and "Future State" business flows with a focus on the value proposition technology solutions could provide
  • Work across business and technology groups to identify opportunities for cross-group or organization-wide technology initiatives
  • Provide leadership on complex, multiple projects which may span one or more business groups or functions
  • Monitor performance, financials, and staffing to ensure portfolio projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and meet business requirements
  • Allocate resources as needed to achieve objectives of one or more projects, meeting business domain needs, financial objectives, and personnel development needs; adjusts priorities and resource allocations to meet changing needs
  • Other duties as assigned

Team Management & Support

  • Responsible for hiring, onboarding, managing and developing a team to execute on YU analytics strategy
  • May be responsible for managing individual contributors or project managers and have performance management responsibilities, may also have input into hiring decisions
  • Regularly provide guidance, mentoring, and coaching for other team members for professional and career development
  • As a key leader of a large cross-functional team, provide support, mentoring, and assistance in the professional development of analysts across the organization
  • As organizational champion for data-driven decision making, may assist other teams in job design, interviews, and onboarding for analytical positions


Site Team/Learning Community Member

  • Serve as a coach/mentor for a small number of current students
  • Join and sometimes facilitate weekly group sessions with students
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Information Technology development background preferred
  • 6-9 years of in-depth, intensive technical experience designing and implementing analytics solutions
  • 3-5 years of experience managing strategy and execution of analytics solutions
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Periodic travel may be required
  • Strong consultative and interpersonal skill to build partnership & manage engagements with business and Information technology
  • Broad understanding of technology relevant to business intelligence/analytics domain
  • Strong organizational skills and process-oriented mindset
  • Experience working with business executives and stakeholders to develop and document business needs and turn into effective solutions
  • Skilled at translating technical jargon into terms business users can understand
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage time and workload on multiple projects/initiatives
  • Knowledge of technology industry best practices and trends
  • Strong business process analytical skills, team building, and communications skills
  • Knowledge of Waterfall, Iterative, and Agile Methodology and able to work with each methodology
  • Skilled at influencing others to achieve results; proactive, responsive, and results-driven
  • Ability to respectfully challenge the status quo to help drive continuous improvement
  • Comfort with change in a fast-moving environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
