The Black Freedom Project (BFP) invites applications for the position of a full- time Director of Campaigns.  

The Director of Campaigns will work with Black-led/centered organizations and Black organizers from across the state of New York. The Director will work to collectively develop, manage and implement bold campaigns that help build the power of Black organizing and position Black communities to thrive. The Director of Campaigns will lead the planning and implementation of BFP’s state-wide BREATHE campaign in support of a NYS BREATHE ACT. This position is based in the state of New York and will require statewide travel as necessary when it is safe to do so.

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

The New York State Black Freedom Project is a coalition of Black organizations, organizers, and advocates across New York state that work to connect Black organizations across the state in order to build power in Black communities. Together, we are building the infrastructure needed for Black-led and Black-centered base-building organizations across New York State to increase their local organizing capacity, collectively advance a statewide organizing strategy, and dismantle systems and policies that create barriers to thriving communities. We believe in the transformation of public policy and praxis through grassroots power and campaigns led by those directly impacted.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning and Coordination

  • Execute the strategic planning, campaign development, and implementation of state-wide campaigns.
  • Work collaboratively with and utilize feedback from BFP Steering Committee, Project Coordinator, member organizations, and other state partners in the strategic planning, development, and implementation of all campaigns.
  • Continuously assess the progress and effectiveness of organizing strategies and make recommendations as needed. 
  • Assess BFP state member campaign needs and synchronize those needs with state-wide agenda and actions. 
  • Coordinate campaign and legislative agenda with Movement for Black Lives national.  

Communication/Collaboration

  • Provide regular updates and reports to BFP Coordinating Committee, Steering Committee and relevant executive staff.
  • Work closely with communications consultants and/or staff in developing a social media strategy to increase public engagement related to Black Freedom’s Project’s work.
  • Work in collaboration with relevant BFP’s members, committees, staff, and consultants to develop BFP literature and campaign specific political education materials. 
  • Provide feedback and support in developing the communication strategy and material.
  • Coordinate relevant campaign and communications related committees (and involved membership), delegation of tasks, and facilitation of meetings.
  • Support BFP Project Coordinator in planning agenda and strategy for monthly state-wide meetings. 
  • Help inform development and fundraising efforts as needed.
  • Facilitate, document, and follow up in staff and coalition meetings as needed. 

Project Management 

  • Develop and manage relevant work plans, making certain that they are aligned with BFP campaign goals and outcomes.
  • Ensure relevant projects are meticulously documented, appropriately updated and tracked.

Navigating and Cultivating Relationships

  • Develop and nurture key relationships with existing and prospective state member organizations in service of BFP’s stated priorities.

Supervision/Management

  • Supervise relevant Black Freedom Project staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Understanding of and alignment with Black Freedom Project mission and vision.
  • 7+ years of experience in movement/community organizing or base building, with at least 5 of those years leading and coordinating political, social justice and/or human rights focused campaigns. 
  • Proficiency in and familiarity with NYS legislative processes and key stakeholders.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience working/collaborating with Black-centered and/or Black-led grassroots organizations, initiatives, and coalitions.
  • Exceptional communicator (written and oral) with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Seasoned project manager with the ability to lead the management of multiple projects simultaneously, while prioritizing and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise excellent judgment and discretion in a politically sensitive and high-pressure environment.
  • Emotionally intelligent and politically mature with the capacity to develop effective solutions to conflicts while sustaining important relationships, alliances and associations.
  • Enthusiasm for supporting and collaborating with Black-led movement organizations.
  • Demonstrated success managing a team of multiple direct reports. 
  • Ability to develop and nurture various relationships with key stakeholders. 
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and experience utilizing digital media content to support community organizing.
  • Ability to travel throughout NY State as needed (post-COVID-19).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Zoom, Google Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Basic knowledge of CRM platforms.

A PLUS 

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Experience leading national campaigns

This full-time position will start in December 2021. Salary is commensurate with experience but will be in the $85,000 to $95,000 salary range. The position includes a comprehensive benefits package: medical, dental and vision insurance coverage, generous paid time off (20 days of vacation, 12 federal holidays and 15 sick days), a flexible work schedule, 401(3)b and 401(k) options, among other benefits.
