About Mote Marine Laboratory

Mote Marine Laboratory (Mote) in Sarasota, Florida is an independent marine research institution with more than 20 research programs, numerous education programs, an aquarium and a marine animal hospital. Established in 1955 by Dr. Eugenie Clark, Mote is dedicated to the advancement of marine science through research, education and public outreach leading to new discoveries and the revitalization and sustainability of our oceans.

 

Position Overview

The Grants and Development Officer is focused primarily on content development and grants management for Mote’s foundation fundraising effort. A skilled writer/editor with strong attention to detail, the Grants and Development Officer will craft solicitation and stewardship materials, write and edit grant proposals and reports, and assist with internet research as needed. The position will report directly to the Director of Foundation Relations and will be an integral part of the Mote Development Team, with opportunities to edit and draft solicitation and stewardship materials for corporate donors, individual donors and the Annual Fund. The Grants and Development Officer will assist in maintaining a structured, grant-based fundraising program resulting in significant philanthropic support for Mote Marine Laboratory.

 

Working with Mote’s Director of Foundation Relations, the Development Officer will:

●      Analyze grant applications and funding requirements and draft or recommend appropriate content

●      Edit and author compelling, donor-centric fundraising proposals and reports as well as general Mote fundraising materials, as needed

●      Manage grant and report submissions including: assembling grant application packages, proofing and fact-checking proposal and report documents, obtaining internal signatures and maintaining up to date proposal and report attachments

●      Assist with grants management including tracking and responding to narrative and financial reporting requirements and maintaining accurate foundation records.

●      In collaboration with Mote researchers, educators and aquarium biologists, draft programmatic updates and proposal and report templates as needed.

●      Develop strong working relationships with Mote scientists and staff and remain conversant on Mote research and other programs, especially in an effort to understand funding needs and possible programmatic fit for prospects and donors.

●      Become immersed in the mission, programs and impact of Mote Marine Laboratory, continually finding ways to increase personal knowledge.

●      Assist with Mote fundraising events as needed.

●      Contribute to the culture of philanthropy at Mote Marine Laboratory.

●      Other duties as assigned.

The Grants and Development Officer:

●      is able to build effective working relationships as needed to build comprehension

●      is comfortable working in a nonprofit setting and with science-based content

●      is able to write for varied audiences including technical and lay audiences, and to translate complex material into compelling narratives

 

Requirements

●      Bachelor degree or equivalent and at least three years of professional employment.

●      Proficiency with WORD, PowerPoint, google documents and Excel

●      Previous grant writing experience is highly desired

●      Basic knowledge of fundraising principles and practices is preferred.

●      Experience with maintaining database records is a plus.

●      Writing samples are required (see below).
