Estate Planning Attorney-Part-Time to Full-Time

An opportunity for an attorney with a passion for justice to provide estate planning services to a diverse public from the comfort of a well-respected, friendly non-profit, consumer law office with an economic justice/anti-discrimination mission, located near Lake Merritt in Oakland. Duties include providing direct services to the public, with modest supervision of law students or paralegals, and working collaboratively with other staff. Other, complementary subject areas are handled by other attorneys in the office of 15 staff. The right candidate is someone who has at least 5 years of experience working in the estate planning, trust administration and probate environment. Candidates must be prepared to assume significant responsibility. The position is part-time to full-time with the possibility of a flexible work schedule. Excellent benefits (health insurance, PTO).

Responsibilities will include:

 • Drafting wills and trust-related documents and petitions

• Assessing cases and strategizing for optimal efficiency and client satisfaction

• Supervision of a paralegal (and possibly legal interns) to assist with legal matters

• Client interaction to answer questions, explain procedures, plan and strategize and solve problems to determine clients' needs

• Advice and counsel to consumers on guardianship

• Workshops/seminars for consumers

• Collaborative work with other office members.

Qualifications include:

• At least 5 years of estate planning experience, including drafting revocable and irrevocable trusts, wills, advance health care directives, and powers of attorney. 

• Experience with guardianship a plus but not required

• Applicants must also have experience performing legal research, and preparing memoranda or other documentation to communicate their findings. •Experience working with or in diverse communities.

• Strong organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, detail oriented, timeliness and good follow-through of cases are required. 

• Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team

• Strong work ethic and high level of integrity

• Knowledge of relevant software including MS Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.) 

• Active membership in good standing -- State Bar of California • Foreign language ability a tremendous plus.
