Description

SUMMARY:   To provide direct services including: deliveries and pick-ups of furniture/ food/ Christmas gifts; supervision and education of a diverse volunteer corps; and carrying out numerous tasks required to prepare for pick-ups and deliveries— administratively and in the facility.

ESSENTIAL/CORE RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Help My Brother’s Keeper accomplish its mission by treating all recipients, volunteers, and donors with kindness, dignity, and respect in Christ’s name
  • Professionally represent My Brother’s Keeper to the public in the community and on the phone
  • Help build community by welcoming visitors and new volunteers
  • Supervise diverse part-time volunteer corps
  • Educate volunteers about the complexities of our work and our mission
  • Physically perform deliveries and pick-ups of furniture, food, and Christmas gifts (includes offering a crucifix at furniture deliveries as described above)
  • Drive commercial vans and 16 ft. moving trucks to perform deliveries and pick-ups
  • Help coordinate furniture pick-up schedule and make confirmation calls, as needed
  • Make quality control decisions on furniture pick-ups
  • Help maintain general organization and appearance of the facility, grounds, and vehicles
  • Clean furniture and perform light repair as needed
  • Assist with set up and breakdown related to special events

The list is intended to summarize the core elements of the role of Direct Service Associates. Other general duties are involved. Responsibilities specific to individual incumbents are noted below in the Additional/ Individual Responsibilities section

REQUIRED BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (desirable but not required);
  • Deep and passionate commitment to Christian service and the mission of My Brother’s Keeper
  • Prior experience demonstrating a strong service orientation, good organizational, people and leadership skills; work in a non-profit or mission-driven organization
  • Track record of strong teamwork skills and the ability to coordinate with diverse constituencies – e.g. other staff, volunteers and donor;
  • Excellent communication /interpersonal skills and ability to effectively engage and build relationships with volunteers
  • Sound organizational, analytical, logistics and people management skills: must be able to effectively problem-solve, multi-task, prioritize and manage time in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Sound judgment/Common sense— position involves decision-making throughout the day which must occur independent of direct supervision; must be able to make quick adjustments to schedules and redirect resources

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

·        Sufficient physical strength to lift and carry heavy furniture (i.e. refrigerators, dressers, couches, beds) up and/or down 3 flights of stairs with one other person

·        Mechanical Skills— must be comfortable with basic tools used to assemble/disassemble furniture as part of pick-ups and deliveries; able to do light repair of furniture in preparation for deliveries

·        Good medical condition sufficient to pass Department of Transportation medical exam (i.e. no seizures, no heart condition, adequate vision)

·        Must hold a valid driver’s license, be able to operate vehicles safely and a maintain clean driving record;

·        Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check

·        Support a positive, healthy and safe working environment and work to support the culture and values of the organization in line with the mission of My Brother’s Keeper.

·        Initiative— independent of supervision, must be able to see and carry out tasks to be accomplished

·        Attitude— has a positive attitude; treats all volunteers, staff, donors, and recipients with respect and consideration; role-modeling community and reflecting the mission of the organization

·        Dependability— demonstrates strong accountability; responds to management direction; completes tasks on time; takes responsibility for own actions

·        Sense of humor— doesn’t “take self too seriously”; can use humor to make others feel comfortable

HOURS:

·        The work week will be approximately 40 hours, generally Monday through Friday, starting at 9:00 AM – until 5:00 PM or later, as needed (includes lunch period) - unless otherwise arranged in accord with role requirements and agreed with direct supervisor.

·        During the very heavy demands of the Christmas program, and as needed during other occasions over the course of the year, it will be necessary to come in early, work evenings, and work on Saturday and/or Sunday.

·        Additionally, My Brother’s Keeper periodically hosts 3-day service retreats which require extended work hours – for example: Urban Plunge in January and Deacon Plunge in May. The Direct Service Associate may be required to stay overnight at our facility along with the retreat participants during these retreats.
