FAMM is a growing national, nonpartisan, nonprofit criminal justice reform organization in Washington, DC. Founded in 1991, FAMM works to reform sentencing laws and prison policies at the state and federal level by mobilizing, organizing, and engaging impacted families and formerly and currently incarcerated people to advocate criminal justice reforms. FAMM is hiring a Policy Analyst to work in the Washington, DC office or remotely. We seek an energetic, collaborative team player with a passion for and experience in criminal justice policy and legislative research and analysis. The Policy Analyst will support our legislative advocacy efforts in Congress and state legislatures and the advancement of our Second Chances Agenda across the country. This is a full-time, paid position.

The ideal candidate should:

  • Have strong writing and editing ability (e.g., opinion editorials, factsheets, talking points, digital actions, emails to members, website content, summaries of bills).
  • Have a strong record of policy and legislative research and analysis, preferably in the field of criminal justice reform, including the ability to summarize legislation accurately in plain and simple language for a lay audience. Experience working in a state legislature or Congress is preferred but not required.
  • Be enthusiastic and strategic about working with people of all political parties and ideologies to advance both broad and incremental prison and sentencing policy reforms.
  • Be comfortable using strategic messaging that appeals to targeted audiences at various points of the political and ideological spectrum.
  • Have a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or law degree.

·      Be comfortable communicating with incarcerated people and their family members regularly.

  • Be willing to travel occasionally and, several times each year, to Washington, DC.

BIPOC and LGBT+ applicants and applicants with a criminal record or other personal experience of the criminal justice system are welcome and encouraged to apply. The Policy Analyst will report to FAMM’s Vice President of Policy and work closely with FAMM’s Deputy Director of Policy – Strategic Initiatives, our Deputy Director of Policy – State Advocacy, and our digital organizing and communications teams.
