The Adler Planetarium is seeking a Development Communications Specialist to join our dynamic team located on Chicago's Museum Campus.


The Position


Reporting to the Manager of Development, the Development Communications Specialist is responsible for the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage proposals and reports to all corporate, foundation, and individual donors. This individual will contribute their outstanding communication skills to the Adler Development Team, which oversees fundraising, membership, and select events for the institution. This individual will also be responsible for:


  • Under the direction of the Manager of Development, researching, drafting copy, and executing creative, donor-centered communications that are on-brand and strategically sound, including grant proposals and reports, corporate funding and sponsorship proposals, stewardship reports, special fundraising and membership appeals, acknowledgment letters, and other materials as needed for donors and members
  • Tracking deadlines, gift agreement documentation, and reporting requirements for major gift, sponsorship, and grant proposals and impact reports, communicating these to building partners and internal stakeholders including Marketing, Finance, and Programs departments; and preparing information for Gift Notification Forms and cross-departmental Quarterly Grants Meeting
  • In partnership with the Manager of Development, preparing materials for major gift, sponsorship, and grant proposals and impact reports, and acting as liaison for other departments in the collection of documentation including program narratives, financial and budget reports, and recognition fulfillment


The Person


We are looking for an experienced communicator with a specialty in writing. This person is creative, detail-oriented, and self-starting, comfortable working both independently and as a member of a team. An ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously is critical, as is a passion for communicating a number of different programs and initiatives to a wide variety of audiences.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent relevant experience
  • Two to three years in a nonprofit fundraising setting, as well of basic knowledge of fundraising techniques and strategies
  • Knowledge of grant components; research, analytical, and strong written communication skills, primarily the ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals and reports
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in field relevant to position
  • Experience in a writing and/or editing position in a science, museum, or academic setting
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Raiser's Edge, Adobe, and inDesign
