In 1887, John Ames Mitchell, editor of Life magazine, raised $800 to send 266 children from New York City to the Life Fresh Air Farm in Branchville, Connecticut. Since that first summer, thousands of children and teens have participated in our nature-based summer camp and after-school programs in New York and New Jersey. Our play-based programs focus on environmental science, experiential learning, and outdoor adventures, and are designed to promote the development of social emotional learning skills in young people.

Summary of Position

The Director of Program Quality’s overarching charge is to ensure every program is implemented in a way that adds the highest possible value to the organization and program participants. They are responsible for providing leadership in the areas of program development, monitoring, and evaluation. This role requires strategic thinking, a deep knowledge of program management principles, and a high level of professional collaboration. 

The Director of Program Quality is a member of Trail Blazers’ senior management team. They will ultimately supervise a cross-departmental team of program design, administration, and logistics managers.

Essential Functions 

  • Provide strategic direction for our programs to support the development of social emotional learning skills in our youth participants
  • Apply an inclusive lens to inform your understanding of youth development programming
  • Collaborate inter-departmentally to ensure program strategy and delivery are aligned
  • Monitor program quality and create plans for improvement
  • Collect and analyze data pertaining to program effectiveness, and transform this data into actionable initiatives
  • Collaborate with other members of the senior management team to create and track progress towards distinct short-term, intermediary, and long-term goals

Job Specifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience in youth development
  • 5+ years of project/program management experience
  • Expertise in inquiry-based learning, youth development, and SEL skill development
  • Experience developing or implementing environmental science, environmental stewardship, or outdoor education programs 
  • A high degree of comfort and confidence stepping up as a leader across the organization
  • Experience managing complex projects, 
  • An understanding of how to maximize impact while maintaining appropriate resourcing, taking smart risks, and learning from mistakes
  • Supervisory experience
  • Professional summer camp or afterschool experience highly preferred

Compensation and Position Details

  • This is a full time, salaried, exempt position
  • Regular hours of work are Monday - Friday, 9/10am - 5/6pm
  • This position will begin in-office, and may transition to a partially remote set-up if that is desired
  • Salary: $60,000
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance with employee contribution available upon hire
  • 403(b) savings account, 3 weeks paid vacation, and unlimited paid personal leave available after 90 day introductory period. Additional week vacation after 3 years of service.
