Job Title: Development Manager

Classification: Full-time, exempt position

Reports to: The Development Manager reports to the Executive Director


Summary: The Development Manager is responsible for overseeing LACBC’s development efforts, including spearheading fundraising efforts, writing grant proposals, and maintaining the continual growth and sustainability of LACBC’s funding streams. The Development Manager will work with internal staff and external consultants as the lead on fundraising events, campaigns, and grant writing to private foundations and support the executive team in preparing grant submissions to government funding sources, government contract opportunities for programs and fund-generating LACBC events. They will also oversee operations relevant to fundraising including Database management and mail-order fulfillment. 


The Development Manager will represent the organization with a high level of professionalism, organization, and friendliness. 


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, advertising or equivalent work experience (3-5 years) in the field of development preferred 
  • Excellent editing, written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of bicycle & pedestrian advocacy a plus
  • Self motivated, creative, detail-oriented and energetic
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental justice, the bicycle movement, and smart growth
  • Experience with corporate sponsors and corporate fundraising
  • Experience with foundation grant writing and foundation fundraising
  • Experience with individual donor campaigns and stewardship 
  • Experience with peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns desired
  • Experience with the LA region’s transportation environment desired
  • Experience working in low-income communities of color desired
  • Knowledge of local and regional funding sources desired
  • Knowledge and experience working with development related database systems 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and Google applications required
  • Project management experience desired 
  • Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced work environment 
  • Must thrive on change, innovation, and teamwork

The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) is a nonprofit organization that promotes bicycling for transportation and recreation throughout LA County’s 88 cities through advocacy, education and outreach. Founded in 1998, LACBC brings together the diverse bicycling community in a united mission to improve the bicycling environment and quality of life for the entire region. Salary: The position offers a competitive annual salary commensurate with experience, plus health insurance benefits, 401(k) retirement plan, paid time off in addition to regular federal/state holidays.


Key Responsibilities:

The Development Manager is primarily responsible for executing and evolving LACBC’s annual fundraising plan and will oversee all relevant operations and contribute to the communications strategies. The Development Manager is responsible for creating, tracking, and maintaining institutional knowledge on grants and fundraising events for the organization, as well as overseeing individual giving programs including peer-to-peer. They are also responsible for overseeing the organization’s continuing effort to build a culture of philanthropy in all aspects of our work.


Grants & Contracts

  • Coordinate and track all grant research, application, and reporting activities, in collaboration with other staff/departments seeking or working on grant-funded programs.  
  • Prepare and lead writing for grant applications and foundation proposals and reports.  
  • Manage research, writing, and submission of government, foundation, and corporate grant proposals.
  • Assist with research, writing, and submission of government and corporate contracts.
  • Manage administrative aspects of fundraising efforts.


Events

  • Support events and outreach opportunities throughout LACBC’s calendar year. 
  • Work closely with the LACBC staff, in addition to consultants, other organizations, board members, etc. who are organizing and participating in rides and events.
  • Oversee all fundraising events on the LACBC calendar to ensure revenue generation and responsible allocation of resources.


Communications

  • Work with the communications team on creation of LACBC content for distribution on both internal (social media, blog, newsletter) and external (print, television, radio, and online) media outlets.
  • Work with the communications team to craft and implement strategic communications plans for LACBC as a whole, as well for individual campaigns, programs, and events.

 

Administration

  • Utilize professional and kind customer service and interpersonal skills to interact with consultants, staff, sponsors, etc.
  • Possess excellent written communication and editing skills.
  • Communicate with individuals, foundations and corporations to cultivate a more robust network of donors.
  • Act as staff liaison and project oversight for Board and special events, and if it applies, hire outside consultants.
  • Oversee organization’s development operations and external consultants who work on development-related tasks.


Computer Skills

  • Utilize computers to communicate, plan, budget and organize projects and events.
  • Limited design and marketing support for LACBC programs and events.
  • Leverage technology to understand our fundraising trends and needs.


Organization, Time Management, and Supervision

  • Work with the executive team to track and manage grant accounts, expenses, fundraising revenues, and construct the annual budget.
  • Develop fundraising and PR materials, as needed.
  • Contribute towards strategic vision yearly for Development efforts and remain accountable to goals set each year.


Problem-Solving Skills

  • Innovative thinking and problem solving skills are required.
  • Must be able to quickly assess complex problems and respond with solutions.


LACBC Organizational Team Work

  • Respond quickly to emails and other queries, attend regular staff meetings, and keep regular records.
  • Attend board meetings, staff retreats and conferences as requested.
  • Respond to requests from your supervisor for special projects, as needed.
  • Participate in fundraising efforts for the organization and to sustain this position.
  • Work as a team player to fulfill the missions and goals of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition.
