Position Description

This position is responsible for providing excellent program instruction for our Mountaineers youth programs. Program Instructors may be the primary leader for one of our year-round youth clubs, such as Mini-Mountaineers (2-5), Pioneers (6-9), or Explorers (10-13), and also instruct/lead as needed for Mountain Workshops. Mountain Workshops are single-day or multi-day experiences designed to expose youth to basic outdoor skills. The day is broken into 1-2 hour activity blocks, depending on the age group, and the curriculum is designed to match the goals of the visiting group and impart on the youth participants a desire to explore and conserve the outdoors. Clubs are year-round programs for youth and their parents. Clubs participants typically attend one evening meeting a month and one weekend outing a month.

Key Responsibilities

Clubs

Program Delivery

· Lead evening meetings (approximately 1-2 times monthly) and weekend outings

· Facilitate parent and volunteer engagement activities, including leadership training and outdoor skill training

· Develop annual progression of skills for new and returning members

· Empower and support parents to lead trips they are qualified to lead

Planning & Preparation

· Volunteer recruitment & scheduling as needed

· Prepare schedules and training modules

· Ensure rooms/space is booked for meetings and training events

· Work with parents to plan trips and prepare trip planning documents

Communications and Logistics

· Serve as first point of contact for all parent and youth communications

· Communicate frequently and clearly to members and parents through the Facebook group, website, and email

· Communicate with prospective members, ensuring they have the information they need to join

· Ensure all trip and activity data is recorded

Mountain Workshops

Program Delivery

Belayer for Indoor and Outdoor Rock Wall during Mountain Workshops

· Inspect equipment prior to use

· Ensure all equipment is set up before group arrival

· Explain rules to group

· Belay group members

· Ensure safe climbing environment at all times

Lead Instructor for Mountain Workshops

· Teach curriculum in 1-2 hour blocks to a variety of age groups. Curriculum may include:

o Map & Compass

o First Aid

o Climbing

o Outdoor Cooking

o Leave No Trace

o Other outdoor skills

· Work closely with volunteer instructors and assistants

· Assist with set-up, clean-up and curriculum development as needed

· Train volunteer assistants as needed

· Lead or co-lead day hikes, snowshoe outings, and day climbing trips to local crags

Candidate Requirements

Preferred Qualifications

· Two years’ Outdoor Education experience

· Experience working with youth

· Ability to work a flexible schedule including 2-3 weekends/month

· Experience training and supervising others

· Knowledge of basic climbing skills and a variety of outdoor pursuits

· Knowledge of, desire to work with, and experience working with a variety of populations, including preschool through high school youth of varied abilities, diverse ethnicities and diverse socio-economic backgrounds

· Demonstrated interpersonal and customer service skills

· Demonstrated excellence in written communication

· Experience with curriculum development

· Experience working with adult volunteers

· Strong organizational skills

· Understanding of the organizational structure and programs of The Mountaineers

· Current CPR & First Aid Certification, Lifeguard Certification and Leave No Trace Certification preferred

· Ability to pass a national criminal background and sex offender check

· Ability to sport lead climb to 5.7.

· Ability to build and clean climbing anchors

· Ability to rappel

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee will be required stand for extended periods of time while leading youth, and must be able to hike on uneven and hilly terrain continuously for up to five miles. The employee is occasionally required to bend, squat, run or climb as part of duties leading

youth.

Compensation and Benefits:

This position is for a part-time, as-needed employee, averaging 10-20 hours per month (subject to change with demand). Hours vary between weekdays, weekends, daytime and evenings. Wages: $16/hr
