Civil Justice, Inc, a Maryland non-profit delivering legal services to clients of low and moderate income, seeks a Maryland licensed attorney to work on our Economic Justice Project. Job responsibilities include:

·        Litigate cases, including tenant debt collection and medical debt cases.

·        Conduct client interviews.

·        Conduct factual investigation and analysis, and legal research.

·        Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, etc.

·        Conduct outreach to communities impacted by tenant and medical debt collection.

·        With members of the Civil Justice team, develop and implement legal and policy strategies to prevent and address problems associated with consumer debt.

·        Draft written materials for legal proceedings and stakeholder meetings.

·        Work collaboratively with members of the Civil Justice team to develop and maintain relationships with partners and stakeholders.

·        Identify trends and practices that undermine the financial stability of Maryland families.

·        Research laws across the country that, with implementation in Maryland, would promote economic justice

·        Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Licensed in Maryland in good standing.
  • Preferred: One to two years of litigation experience.
  • Familiarity with consumer protection and debt collection laws.
  • Demonstrated ability to do detail-oriented work and manage competing tasks.
  • Good writing and oral communication skills, including for complex legal and policy ideas.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

The starting annual salary range for this position is between $52,000-$55,000, depending on experience and is contingent on grant funding.
