The National Guild for Community Arts Education (“Guild”) seeks a visionary and skilled professional to direct its leadership development and learning programs. The Guild is looking for someone who is a life-long learner, possesses a keen intellect and tenacious spirit, and shares our belief in the transformational power of creativity, equity, leadership, and community. The Director of Leadership and Learning (“Director”) will have an opportunity to work with a creative staff and to collaborate with arts education leaders across the country to advance community arts education regionally and nationally. As an integral member of the Guild’s senior leadership team, the Director will play a key role in building a strategy to deepen and expand the Guild’s leadership development programming over the next five years.

Organizational Overview

Founded in 1937, the National Guild strives to ensure all people have opportunities to maximize their creative potential by developing leaders, strengthening organizations, and advocating for community arts education. The Guild serves a national network of neighborhood schools of the arts, arts and cultural centers, arts education divisions of universities, theater and dance companies, museums, and more. Our members serve 2.5 million students each year, employ 16,000 teaching artists, and reach an additional 8 million people through performances and exhibits. The Guild has an annual operating budget of approximately $2 million.

Position Description

The Director of Leadership Development and Learning (“Director”) is a salaried, exempt position reporting to, and partnering with, the Chief Program Officer to ensure the Guild’s training and leadership development activities align with the organization’s mission and strategic priorities to enhance the effectiveness of leaders and organizations within the community arts education field. As an integral member of the senior management team, the Director of Leadership Development and Learning plays an active role as a thought-partner in planning for the organization’s overall advancement.

The Director of Leadership Development and Learning will serve as part of a five-member program team and will have two direct reports.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

National Conference for Community Arts Education

  • Direct program development and production for the annual conference
  • Develop strategies to engage local and regional communities and broader Guild membership in program development and marketing
  • Work with communications team on conference marketing and sales strategies
  • Leverage conference into year-round Guild programming and knowledge development

Leadership Institutes and Alumni Networks

  • Direct development and implementation of the Community Arts Education Leadership Institute (CAELI) and expand leadership development programs designed to reach diverse target population
  • Direct the CAELI Alumni Network and develop activities in concert with alumni that support the Network’s ongoing leadership development and connectivity
  • Direct the Emerging Young Artists Leadership Exchange

Learning Networks

  • Build and strengthen leadership and learning networks at the local, state and regional levels through strategic partnerships and alliances, and connecting them to the Guild’s resources, membership, and training  


  •  Oversee strategy for year-round virtual and in-person training activities that advance the Guild’s key initiatives, build on topics and relationships informed by the national conference, and align with the goals and activities of the Guild’s Member Networks
  • Work with Senior Staff to create ongoing professional and leadership development opportunities for staff


  • Collaborate with the Chief Program Officer and the program team to develop and implement evaluation and assessment process for all programs
  • Support fundraising efforts

Other duties and special projects as assigned by the Chief Program Officer. Some travel required, including for the annual conference, CAELI, and regional trainings.


  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in leadership development and arts education
  • Demonstrated ability to design and facilitate training experiences for adult learners required, preferably in the areas of arts, culture, and education
  • Demonstrated effective program development and management skills, including ability to be flexible, manage multiple projects, and prioritize competing and shifting demands/needs of stakeholders in a highly collaborative environment
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate persuasive arguments in writing and orally to motivate and influence people, and to exercise sound professional judgement in all interactions
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and productively contribute to a coherent organizational culture as well as to a collaborative leadership team focused on deepening programmatic impact
  • A passionate commitment to investing in the growth and leadership of individuals and organizations within the community arts education field as a strategy for ensuring all people have opportunities to maximize their creative potential and, in particular, a demonstrated commitment to expanding leadership opportunities for people of color
  • Consistently strong track-record of reliably creating effective and accurate deliverables/work products in timely fashion to meet deadlines

Ability to leverage a data-driven approach to effectively problem-solve across multiple programs
