We’re looking for an energetic, creative, and proactive team member who is interested in being part of something truly special and taking an innovative children’s charity to the next level. Each member of our small team contributes a big part of helping us achieve our goal of reaching seriously ill kids in children’s hospitals across the nation in a smart, sustainable manner.


Open Heart Magic: Not Your Typical Non-Profit Children’s Charity

Open Heart Magic (OHM) began in 2004 with the mission of bringing the transformative and therapeutic power of magic to kids facing the toughest medical situations. Today, with a staff of five and budget of $800,000, over 170 volunteer Hospital Magicians perform and teach kids magic at their hospital bedsides to change the hospital experience by taking their minds off their fears, bringing them hope and making them feel stronger to tackle their illnesses.


Our volunteer Hospital Magicians go into pediatric intensive care, oncology departments, the burn unit and even isolation rooms to reach kids who are in the fight of their lives. Our intense screening, training and certification program has created a dynamic community of passionate, talented, caring volunteers. 


We’re looking for a Manager who will care just as much.


Today, we reach over 13,000 children one-to-one at twelve children’s hospitals in Chicago, Ann Arbor and Cleveland, including Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic. As part of our commitment to bringing magic to more hospitalized kids every year, we will be launching new programs at three new hospital partners over the next twelve months. Meanwhile, we’re preparing a long-term operations plan to continue our successful growth to new hospitals across the nation.

The Manager will work with the Director of Operations and Development to grow OHM’s operations and and revenue to prepare for national expansion over the next four years. This reimagined role will be critical in building and maintaining the volunteer and Board communities in our expanded locations of Ann Arbor and Cleveland, while also supporting HQ in operational processes and fundraising activities. 


Job Requirements

We’re looking for someone who has solid experience in non-profits and is used to wearing multiple hats. OHM is a tightly and well run organization with the spirit and culture of a growing start up. We prefer a fast pace pursuing exciting results over blindly following the way its always been done. We are dedicated to leading the children’s hospital programming niche with the most thoughtful and beneficial children’s hospital programs fulfilled by the best trained and most passionate group of volunteers in the nation.


We need someone to take the high-level strategies designed by leadership, and suggest, confirm, and implement the steps required to get there. 


We need the quality of organization processes to function with 100% certainty, because seriously ill kids are depending on us. A great track record of keeping yourself organized and strong project management skills are a must. New ideas and ongoing innovation are at the core of OHM, and we expect every staff member to contribute to help us keep getting better and growing sustainably.


Specifics on Requirements

  • Experience in Board relations is vital, including recruitment, management, and engagement activities
  • Proven success in securing and managing foundation and corporate grant funding, from prospect research through stewardship; willingness to drive the growth and strength of our grant program as a whole
  • Ability to own projects from start to finish with minimal direction on day-to-day activities, as well as time management skills to work on multiple projects concurrently with a strict attention to detail
  • Experience with cross-channel fundraising and/or recruitment campaigns, including social media, email, paid advertising, etc.
  • Great written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to interact effectively in person, by email, and over the phone with a wide variety of groups of people.
  • The willingness and desire to get your hands dirty on the front lines of a small but might organization: handwriting hundreds of envelopes, moving boxes, and cheering on our charity team runners along the marathon course
  • The flexibility to work some evenings and weekends for special events is required


Job Responsibilities

  • You’ll be a primary driver on building our local communities in Ann Arbor and Cleveland, focused on new local Boards as well as volunteer recruitment
  • You’ll also be responsible for the nuts and bolts of the grant program, expanding it to play a larger role in our overall fundraising strategy
  • You’ll be a key point person in envisioning and implementing creative events with a goal of engagement and cultivation
  • You’ll be the right hand to the Director of Operations & Development, supporting programs including Charity Team, volunteer recruitment, individual fundraising, and general organization operations
