About Robin Hood

Robin Hood is New York City’s largest poverty-fighting organization. In addition to funding 200+ of the most effective nonprofits serving New Yorkers experiencing poverty, we amplify financial support with a range of management assistance.

Building on more than 30+ years of experience, Robin Hood is expanding our impact with an explicit focus on lifting families sustainably and measurably out of poverty through influencing policy, raising our thought leadership profile, importing and exporting effective ideas and strategies nationally, and building new collaborations with strategic partners.

About Blue Ridge Labs

Blue Ridge Labs, a program of Robin Hood, connects low-income community members with technologists to develop solutions to tackle economic inequality. We provide the space, funding, and resources to develop life-changing products and services. Right now, millions of people use our tools to access benefits, increase their income, seek legal services, and hold landlords accountable.

Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced and proactive program manager who is passionate about supporting the design and development of new high-impact tech platforms to join our team. The Program Manager for Product Design and Development will lead delivery of our Fellowship program, where people with technical skills, lived experience, and issue area expertise come together to explore, design, and spin out new products and services that address the needs of low-income families. Alumni include both venture-backed startups like Propel (the makers of FreshEBT) and Opus, and nonprofit tech startups like JustFix.nyc and Upsolve. In addition to leading the Fellowship, the Program Manager for Product Design and Development will serve as the Labs’ resident expert on product design and development, supporting participants in other Labs programs, and staff at Robin Hood more broadly, as they navigate the product development process.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Lead the delivery of the Fellowship program

  • In close collaboration with the Senior Program Manager for Community Engagement, explore, select, and design Fellowship challenge areas
  • Lead the Fellowship recruiting and selection process, including working with other Labs staff and alumni to assess potential applicants and host finalist selection workshops
  • Manage the Fellowship program, including overseeing the programming calendar, managing the contracting and payment process, facilitating cohort activities, and coordinating pro bono supports
  • Develop and, where relevant, deliver programming sessions to help Fellows build or augment skills around user research, user testing, prototyping, product management, and tech development
  • Advise and consult fellows as they discover, test, prototype and validate potential products.
  • Foster cohort dynamics, including supporting the group in setting and maintaining norms, ensuring equity, and making sure all voices can be heard
  • Coach individuals and teams through the process of developing new, tech enabled products and services that make a real impact.
  • Identify and build out new high-impact, mutually valuable ways to engage partners, mentors, and other Robin Hood staff in supporting the Fellows and their work

Develop and deliver content in areas of expertise for other program offerings and in support of Robin Hood’s work more broadly

  • Work with the Senior Program Managers for Venture Programs and Community Engagement to identify where and how best they can support participants in other programs (e.g. teams in the Catalyst incubator) through training sessions, workshops, and hands-on coaching
  • Develop resources to support Labs teams and other partners in making common user research and product design and development decisions (e.g. when and how to engage with an outside agency to build custom software)
  • Lend expertise to projects inside other parts of Robin Hood (e.g. supporting the development of a grant to build a new tech platform at a partner organization)

Grow and maintain our network of technical mentors

  • Identify and connect with experienced designers, product managers, engineers, and data scientists who are interested in supporting social impact projects and bring them into the Labs ecosystem
  • Develop engagement opportunities that meet the needs of both mentors and program participants
  • Create and share targeted content and events (e.g. newsletters, networking events, etc.) to strengthen the relationships between mentors and the broader Labs community

The Program Manager, Product Design and Development is on the Blue Ridge Labs team and will report to the Managing Director, Blue Ridge Labs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 5+ years of experience required. Equivalents to a degree could include completion of a high-quality certification and/or bootcamp program in addition to relevant professional experience.
  • Strong candidates will have a track record of researching, designing, and building new products and services, ideally including tech-enabled platforms. Experience hiring technical staff and / or contracting with outside agencies will be helpful but is not required.
  • Prior experience working with very early-stage organizations, ideally in the capacity of founder or co-founder.
  • Deep knowledge of human-centered design, UI/UX design, and / or digital/technical product management required. Prior experience leading design sprints and familiarity with software engineering and / or mobile app development strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and coaching skills, ideally with experience managing or mentoring both individuals and small groups through challenging experiences
  • A track record of success building and activating networks or coalitions
  • Thrives in fast-paced, action-oriented environments and is comfortable juggling multiple workstreams simultaneously
  • A creative and flexible approach to problem-solving with an emphasis on finding ways to quickly test new ideas and a willingness to change course and adapt in the face of feedback or new data
  • Strong empathy and communication skills, particularly the ability to quickly build trust with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • A commitment to social justice, including racial justice
  • We are a small, highly collaborative team that strives for a high level of self-awareness and open and honest conversations with each other and our community about how we can improve. We want someone who is excited about being a part of that culture and is willing to go above and beyond the specifics of a job description to help the team succeed.

Preferred but not required:

  • High degree of comfort with a range of prototyping and user testing tools as well as a familiarity with the growing ecosystem of “no code” platforms (e.g. Zapier, Bubble.io, Webflow, Intergromat, AirTable, etc.)
  • Knowledge of the challenges faced by underserved populations in New York City, through prior formal or informal work and / or direct personal experience
