Director of Programs

Barbershop Books, winner of the National Book Foundation's Innovations in Reading Prize, inspires Black boys and other vulnerable children to read for fun through child-centered, culturally responsive, and community-based programming and content. Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Director of Programs will be responsible for the operational success of all Barbershop Books programs, including our community-based programming, E-library, and the launch of our new K-3 supplemental literacy program for schools. The Director of Programs will manage and oversee the growth of a small team of staff, interns, and volunteers, and lead program development, delivery, quality control, and evaluation. In this newly established role, the Director of Programs will be a key external face of Barbershop Books in the community.

A successful candidate will lead programs, partner with the ED, and work collaboratively with a high-performance executive team.

Leadership:

• Cultivate existing and new relationships with community partners, vendors, and volunteers to ensure successful program implementation and expansion
• Develop and implement strategies that will optimize synergies among programs 
• Vet and manage program related consultants and temporary team members (e.g., Reading So Lit Summer Educators, Curriculum Consultants)
• Participate in Executive Team Meetings and projects

Team Management and Development:

• Develop and implement a system to evaluate the skills, experience, and training needs of staff, interns, and volunteers
• Develop objective performance measurements across programs and geographic locations, to ensure consistent, high-quality evaluation and goal setting
• Instill a sense of accountability among staff, interns, and volunteers by modeling high performance standards
• Recruit and train quality program staff, interns, and volunteers

Program Operational Management

• Create and update standard operating procedures for all programs and streamline internal processes to support greater programmatic efficiency and effectiveness 
• Use Salesforce to establish and track consistent, objective, program performance standards of accountability
• Ensure successful entry of relevant program contacts and data into Salesforce
• Prepare and present program reports and collaborate with various departments 

Specific requirements include:

• Minimum of a BA, MA preferred
• At least 3 years of experience in a team management role 
• Demonstrated success developing and evaluating program models, and selecting and successfully operationalizing innovative programs
• Proficient in using technology as a management reporting tool and experience working with information technology staff to develop and implement program evaluation systems
• Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth
• Experience working with a high-performance, collaborative, constructive team
• Strength managing, developing, training, and retaining high performing individuals and teams
• Deep understanding of child development, curriculum design, community engagement, and program evaluation
• Demonstrated results in managing through complex systems and proven experience negotiating win-win agreements
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for Barbershop Books’s mission
• Teaching experience in early childhood a plus
