The Madeira School is seeking a Director of Summer Programs. Reporting to the Assistant Head of School, the Director of Summer Programs is responsible for developing a high quality, enriching summer programs consisting of Camp Greenway, GirlsFirst, Summer Riding Workshop and specialty camps. This is a management position that requires extensive planning, organization, decision-making skills and business acumen. In addition, it requires a high level of creativity and substantive experience working with young children, adolescents, and young adults.




  • Create, market, and oversee the summer camp operation including day camps, specialty, and residential programs
  • Recruit, interview, and hire all summer programs staff; work with Human Resources to post summer employment opportunities
  • Prepare a strategic plan for all programs including financial, marketing, and logistic that aligns with the School’s mission and financial goals
  • In collaboration with the CFO and Assistant Head of School develop each program’s budget; actively manage the budget to ensure the highest levels of profitability
  • Manage each camp’s budget to ensure revenue and expenses are properly reflected; collaborate with Business Office to ensure budgets are accurate
  • Liaise with Communications team to develop marketing material to promote camp offerings and recruit new campers
  • Work with the Director of Enrollment Management to identify and reach out to campers who may be good candidates for Madeira
  • Work with Facilities to ensure all camp equipment and building spaces are prepared prior camp
  • Prepare all written/electronic materials including staff contracts, camp schedule, training schedule for all major camps

·        Develop and execute in conjunction with seasonal administrative team a detailed plan of camp programming, schedule/logistics, staffing, and training

·        Create and monitor all safety and health programs for summer programming in partnership the Health and Wellness Center

·        Evaluate each program’s operations and effectiveness annually as well as staff working those programs

·        Prepare appropriate summary reports including audit support to the business office

  • Collaborate with Director of Auxiliary Programs for purposes of managing space allocation in a cooperative manner
  • Research new ideas and programming for continuous development of summer programs
  • Supervise the summer program and camp staff



·     Bachelor’s degree required

·     3-5 years camp leadership experience

·     Experience with school-aged children and young adults required

·     Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritize work

·     Demonstrated ability to work within and manage program budget

·     Ability to work independently and perform with exceptional initiative and judgment; ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with diplomacy and discretion

·     Strong marketing skills and customer-service orientation

·     Strong written and oral communication skills

·     Highly proficient in data management systems and computer applications (e.g., Word, particularly in Excel); willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed

·     Willingness and ability to work flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and select weekends
