MISSION DISTRICT YOUNG MUSICIANS PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Community Music Center seeks a coordinator for our Mission District Young Musicians Program Coordinator (MDYMP). MDYMP is a tuition-free program offering comprehensive music education with a focus on Latin music. The Coordinator oversees and manages day to day aspects of the MDYMP program including organizing student recruitment and audition processes, supporting student engagement and success, supporting and coordinating work of the faculty team, engaging parents, and coordinating student performances.  The Coordinator also implements evaluation processes and works with the faculty team and the Program Director to analyze progress and adapt program goals and evaluation processes on an ongoing basis.


The ideal candidate will be a bi-lingual music educator and/or cultural organizer who is passionate about music education and possesses strong communication, organizational and leadership skills.  

CLASSIFICATION: Administrative

RESPONSIBLE TO: Program Director 

HOURS: 7 hours/week including Saturdays 9:45am – 12:15pm

SALARY: Comparable to other community nonprofit organizations

BENEFITS: Pro-rated sick leave and vacation time based on hours worked

START DATE:  As soon as possible. 

This job can be combined with CMC Program Coordinator Position (25hours/week) 


Mission District Young Musicians Program at Community Music Center (CMC)

The award winning Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP), founded in 2007, offers a comprehensive music education with a focus on Latin music. This tuition free program primarily serves low-income Latino youth from the Mission District who are nominated by their public school music teachers and community organizations. MDYMP students receive a scholarship for weekly private lessons on their instruments and a weekly group class in which students learn music from Latin America and the Caribbean and learn music theory and musicianship skills.

Group classes (currently offered via zoom) take place from 10:00am – 12:00 noon each Saturday and students also receive a scholarship for private lessons weekly. MDYMP collaborates with other Mission district arts organizations to develop student performance opportunities such as for Carnaval, Cinco de Mayo and Paseo Artístico events. During distance learning, performances are adapted to digital platforms.

The MDYMP group class team consists of a Coordinator, and six teachers. The MDYMP team is supervised and supported by the Program Director.

MDYMP Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Oversees and manages day to day aspects of the MDYMP program including student and faculty communications and session/event planning.
  • Attends the MDYMP program weekly from 9:45am – 12:15pm (includes a check in with faculty before and after each session).  
  • Oversees student engagement in the program, addressing attendance and/or other issues as they arise with student(s) and families in consultation with the faculty team and Program Director.
  • Creates and maintains a student roster for faculty/student/family/registrar use to support various program functions. 
  • Supported by CMC’s Program Director and MDYMP faculty, recruits students and coordinates auditions.
  • Engages parents and families bilingually through the audition process and beginning year parent/student orientation and throughout the year as needed by email, text and phone to support program goals.   
  • In consultation with the rest of the Teachers and Program Director, designs, plans and coordinates performances and special projects to ensure their success as a learning experience for the students and as an opportunity to visibly demonstrate learning. 
  • Coordinates the process of curriculum development with MDYMP faculty and organizes evaluation processes with multiple stakeholders.  Drawing from the evaluation process, the Coordinator works with the faculty team and Program Director to adapt program goals on an ongoing basis.
  • In consultation with the CMC’s Program Director and faculty, recruits faculty, guests teachers and guest artists.
  • Coordinates Teachers, Teaching Assistants and volunteers involved in the group class, organizing meetings, gathering payroll information, arranging for substitute teachers as needed.
  • Communicates with CMC private lesson instructors to follow up on MDYMP student attendance, share curriculum and address other topics as needed.
  • Coordinates MDYMP spring juries.
  • Coordinates MDYMP participation in YMP Student Leader Program including cultivating potential student leaders, coordinating meetings and student leader activities. Support students as needed including with letters of reference and documentation of their work. During distance learning, the coordinator will adapt opportunities for student leadership.
  • Communicates weekly with Program Director to provide updates on MDYMP program.
  • Interfaces with CMC registrars to update MDYMP student roster; creates attendance lists for Saturday classes and takes attendance.
  • Submits payroll information for all MDYMP faculty bi-weekly.


Location, Day and Time

MDYMP group classes currently take place via zoom Saturdays 10:00am – 12:00pm noon during the school year. It is important that the MDYMP Coordinator be available on Saturdays from 9:45am – 12:15 noon. When MDYMP returns to in person teaching, classes will resume at Mission Cultural Center at the same time and the Coordinator will work on site with the students and faculty team. 

Compensation

The Mission District Young Musicians Program Coordinator is paid hourly up to a maximum of 28 hours per month for 11 months of the year (July is off).

Qualifications:

  • Spanish/English Bilingual (required)
  • Detail oriented with exceptional organizational skills
  • Background in music education and/or music performance preferred
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to develop a strong relationship with parents and cultivate parent support and participation in program
  • Works well independently and with others
  • Knowledge of Music Writing Software (Finale) desirable
  • Computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications Microsoft office and Google business suite. 
  • At least one year of experience organizing arts programs preferred.
