The Black Educators Initiative (BEI)

As a fundamental part of our mission at Urban Teachers, the Black Educators Initiative aims to increase the number of Black teachers in Baltimore, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Washington, DC and Philadelphia while simultaneously ensuring they are supported and embraced. Urban Teachers received a $25 million grant from the Ballmer Group specifically designed to bring more Black teachers into our nation’s schools. Additionally, there is a specific focus on increasing the number of Black male teachers entering into and staying in the teaching profession long-term. $19 million is provided directly to Black participants in the form of grants and student loan forgiveness over the course of their programmatic commitment. Over five years, Urban Teachers aims to bring 880 Black teachers, including 260 Black male teachers, into the profession.

Your Role

Reporting to the Vice President of Recruitment and Admissions, the Managing Director, Black Educator Initiative establishes the vision, drives results and secures funding and partnerships to ensure the longevity of this work. In this role you will lead organization wide efforts and direct national campaigns that are strategically designed to recruit, train and retain Black educators.

As the Managing Director, Black Educators Initiative, you are an external facing leader who works with senior staff to establish a strategic vision for BEI, coordinates this vision across Urban Teachers’ broader organizational strategy, provides dedicated support to all 4 site leaders to drive results and is jointly responsible for outcomes, and alongside our VP of Development, secures funding for the longevity of this work.

In this role you will integrate this strategic vision within the 5 Strategic Priorities of the organization, with an emphasis around Access and Affordability, Program Redesign, and Telling our Story.

Location for this role is flexible, but candidates located in Baltimore, Washington, DC, Dallas/Ft. Worth, or Philadelphia are strongly preferred.

Core Responsibilities

  • Vision and Strategy: The Managing Director sets the strategic vision and is the key decision maker of the Black Educator Initiative. Utilize data to monitor progress against key milestones and grant goals.
  • Partnerships: Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders within the field to advance the work of recruiting, training and retaining Black educators. Establish strategic partnerships with leading organizations, companies and entities including with UNCF and Ballmer Group.
  • Communication and Fundraising: Serve as the primary spokesperson and advocate to local and national audiences, including current and potential donors, to further the work beyond the initial grant period.
  • Team Leadership: Lead the development of BEI goals and performance. Laterally manage site Executive Directors, faculty and staff to meet ambitious goals.
  • Ensures all elements of BEI are supported and funded as needed
  • Establish, oversees, and maintain partnerships and alliances related to BEI, including with UNCF and Ballmer Group
  • Manages Assistant Director and manages across the organization, specifically in working with Development, Performance and Evaluation, MarComms, and Policy
  • Reports to VP of Recruitment and Admissions

Requirements

10+ years of demonstrated experience with a strong history of meeting and exceeding goals

  • Demonstrated project management experience; ability to both map out ambitious goals and the strategic planning skills necessary to move from idea to execution
  • Strong relationship building skills
  • A deep commitment to and experience working in and with Black communities in America
  • Experience working across multiple teams in various cities in order to meet goals
  • Experience engaging with high level stakeholders
  • Strong verbal and written communication
