Staten Island Legal Services (across the street from the ferry), is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as the Director of the Family Law and Domestic Violence Unit (FLDVU). 


Program Description 

Staten Island Legal Services (SILS) fights poverty and seeks racial, social, and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. SILS provides high-quality, innovative representation to address the pressing legal needs of Staten Island’s diverse low-income populations. SILS focuses on the problems that have the greatest impact on our clients — preserving affordable and decent housing, representing survivors of domestic violence, obtaining immigration status and preventing deportations, advocating for the LGBTQ community, preventing foreclosures, and advocating for students with educational needs and people with disabilities. SILS is a part of Legal Services NYC (LSNYC), which is the largest provider of civil legal services in the country. Unit Description and Responsibilities 

The practice in FLDVU includes a range of family law cases – contested and uncontested divorces, custody/visitation, orders of protection, child support and spousal support. Our practice includes litigation in Richmond County Family Court, Supreme Court, and the Integrated Domestic Violence Court. The FLDVU Director will be responsible for directly supervising unit staff, including an attorney, a social worker and a paralegal; managing the unit’s grant contracts by ensuring compliance and reporting direct service deliverables; overseeing outreach and community education, especially with local agencies; working with community advocates to address systemic issues facing victims; collaborating with other units at SILS to ensure comprehensive legal services for clients; and provide trainings on domestic violence-related topics in matrimonial and family law. The Director will supervise the unit and have an active caseload.  

Experience and Qualifications:  

• Applicants must have a J.D. from an accredited law school;

• A minimum of 5 years of experience as a family law attorney; 

• Experience in matrimonial practice is strongly preferred; 

• Demonstrated experience working with domestic violence survivors;

• Experience working in a supervisory role strongly preferred or leadership role;

• Experience working with diverse low-income communities and familiarity with structural and systemic racism and their intersection with poverty. Strong ties to or understanding of the Staten Island low-income communities is a plus;

• Commitment to social justice and working in low-income communities and communities of color to advance equity; 

• Experience in trainings, grant writing and grant reporting is strongly preferred; 

• Superb analytical, writing and communication skills; 

• Strong organizational, planning and time management skills; and 

• Fluency or proficient in Spanish or another language is a plus.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Hybrid remote work policy and excellent benefit package.
