Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago is seeking an entry level individual to work initially as part of interdisciplinary team on two projects that involve empirical and conceptual studies of library systems pediatric primary care settings. The Associate Researcher primarily will be working on two projects: (1) support the implementation of school-library partnerships and describe the intersections of library renovations on stakeholders’ perceptions at library branches, and (2) investigate and capture systems transformations intended to prevent and ameliorate toxic stress in families with infants and toddlers. Whereas the current position configuration entails the two projects described, there is opportunity to continue as a team member in additional projects going forward.

The Associate Researcher will support project team in discussions regarding study design and methodology; conduct interviews and focus groups with stakeholders, perform modeling and statistical analyses; and develop and maintain programs that convert data into analyzable formats and/or that can be utilized for data analysis. As a secondary focus, this individual will contribute to the development of written products including literature reviews, briefs, reports, newsletters, and presentations for practice, policy, and research audiences. This position is located in Chicago, IL.



The primary responsibilities of the position are as follows:

  • Participate in discussions regarding study design and methods.
  • Convert, merge and/or assemble data/datasets for analysis. 
  • Write sections of research results and may assist with report production activities, including proofing, formatting and creating tables and graphs.
  • Monitor, track and perform quality checks on quantitative data collection
  • Manage survey data to include data cleaning, variable transformation, and linking datasets
  • Plan and prepare meeting materials and protocols for data collection site visits
  • Provide background support for drafting emails, memos, presentations, and talking points for internal and external audiences.
  • Support researchers to prepare written products such as literature reviews, reports, briefs, etc.
  • Assist the project team with seeking and maintaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for all study activities



Minimum of Master’s degree in Social Work, Public Policy, Sociology, Public Health, or other social science field required.


At least 2 years of previous applied research experience required.

  • Ability to translate and convey complex concepts and study findings in oral and written communications required.
  • Demonstrated capacity for working in a collaborative research environment required.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative required.
  • Problem-solving skills required.
  • Ability to manage multiple, concurrent tasks required.
  • Demonstrated judgment and discretion in the handling of sensitive information required.
  • Knowledge of statistics preferred. 
  • Demonstrated experience with methods, software, advanced experience with Excel required (REDCap, Atlas, Stata, SPSS, MPLUS) preferred
  • Strong writing ability and skilled in conducting literature reviews
