The Unity Council is a non-profit Social Equity Development Corporation with a 50-year history in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland. Our mission is to promote social equity and improve quality of life by building vibrant communities where everyone can work, learn, and thrive.

 

Our programs aim to provide the community with the tools, knowledge, and resources to transform their lives and ultimately achieve their long-term educational, career, and financial goals. These holistic programs and services reach more than 8,000 individuals and families annually in five languages. Programs include: early childhood education, youth mentorship and leadership development, employment services, career readiness training, housing and financial stability, senior citizen services, affordable housing and neighborhood development, and arts and cultural events. Our work expands beyond the Fruitvale district and now reaches across Oakland and into Concord. The Unity Council employs a diverse workforce of more than 250 people who reflect the linguistic, cultural, and ethnic identity of the communities we serve.


Program Summary

The Development and Communications Department is responsible for planning and executing fundraising campaigns and communication strategies that fulfill the organization’s five-year strategic plan and other goals as determined by the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operations Officer. The department oversees all fundraising from corporate, philanthropic, government, and individual donors, in addition to all external and internal marketing and communications. Finally, the department is also charged with the planning and production of all fundraising events; the annual Fruitvale Dia de Los Muertos Festival; and provides support to other departments in the organization of employee events and initiatives.


Position Summary

The Major Gifts Officer will be a key frontline fundraiser, managing a substantial donor portfolio and playing a lead role in strategically qualifying, engaging, soliciting, and stewarding prospects and donors. Committed to efficiency and systems, the MGO will also play a vital role in advancing the performance and sophistication of The Unity Council’s major gifts program by helping to establish systems, best practices, and a collaborative team approach to fundraising.

 

Responsibilities

·        Responsible for personally soliciting gifts between $1,000 and $25,000+ from current and prospective donors

·        Manage relationships with approximately 75 - 100 current and prospective donors

·        Manage and lead all aspects of the donor engagement cycle for assigned portfolio using a Moves Management approach

·        Initiate contact with potential and current major donors

·        Develop appropriate cultivation strategies for each donor, including working collaboratively with volunteers and Board members

·        Meet face-to-face with donors, spending a minimum of 40% of time out of the office (or in online donor meetings)

·        Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure

·        Make solicitations when appropriate

·        Ensure all assigned donors receive outstanding stewardship

·        Recommend next steps for donors, including movement within portfolios as appropriate

·        Analyze and utilize prospect research; assign gift ratings

·        Participate in and in some cases lead regular major donor strategy sessions

·        Work collaboratively with and in support of other team members and volunteers to ensure donors have a seamless and outstanding experience engaging with and supporting The Unity Council

·        Author compelling major gift proposals

·        Leverage the capacity of ETapestry to track action, create reports and manage relationships ensuring records for all assigned donors are up to date; complete timely and accurate Contact Reports

·        Attend, and in some cases assist, in the execution of house parties, tours, stewardship events, etc.

·        Prepare regular stewardship/impact reports

·        Experience with ETapestry or other donor relationship management program preferred.

Qualifications

·        3 to 5 years of demonstrated success in nonprofit fundraising, preferably in a cultural, and/or cause-based institution.

·        Demonstrated track record of success in donor acquisition, major gift solicitation, and management.

·        Experience in/exposure to donor relations, special events, and moves management.

·        Experience working on a fundraising team with shared revenue goals.

·        Knowledge of or competency in planned giving a plus.

·        College-level coursework and/or professional training in fundraising preferred.

 

Essential Functions

·        Advanced computer skills with strong MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and social media skills.

·        Regularly required to operate standard office equipment (personal computer, photocopier, fax, etc.)

·        Ability to work on a computer up to 6 hours a day.

·        Regularly required to sit for long periods of time, and occasionally stand and walk.

·        Regularly required to use hands to operate computer and other office equipment.

·        Close vision required for computer use.
