POSITION DESCRIPTION

AMIGOS is looking for a motivated and self-directed individual who has experience and passion for mentoring diverse college-aged youth, monitoring and supporting their health and wellness through individual and group facilitation exercises and other activities.

The Health and Wellness Coordinator will support the Program Director and Gap Coordinator in facilitating a leadership, service and cultural exchange pod program in Costa Rica. This person will always be with the group and stay at the group lodging location. The primary duty of the Health and Wellness Coordinator is to ensure the health and safety of all volunteers and program staff. This includes, but is not limited to, daily monitoring of signs and symptoms of COVID-19 of volunteers and program staff, co-facilitating group activities to support and ensure the health and wellness of program volunteers and staff, active listening and problem solving when confronted with a health or safety concern, assisting volunteers with any medical or mental health need and maintaining confidential documentation and reporting. This person will work closely with the Health and Safety Manager and will play a key role in ensuring that all COVID-19 preventive measures and precautions are followed. In addition, the Health and Wellness Coordinator will support any physical and/or mental health concerns which may arise during the program through education, assistance and accompaniment to local clinics and/or medical facilities. This person will be responsible for all health and safety reporting to the Health and Safety Manager and documentation of any health and/or safety related incident. This person will also support with program logistics, facilitation of activities and mentorship. The Health and Wellness Coordinator works closely with the staff team to implement a comprehensive and enriching program Costa Rica. This is a full-time seasonal position.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to)

Volunteer Support

·        Conduct daily check-ins to assess signs/symptoms of COVID-19 and submit report to Health and Safety Manager.

·        Schedule appointments for clinic and/or hospital visits and accompany volunteer to all medical appointments.

·        Help to supervise a group of 20 volunteers

·        Hold bi-weekly 1:1 check-in with program volunteers and fill out appropriate paperwork. 

·        Support in conflict resolution within group dynamics.

·        Engage volunteers in fun, creative and challenging activities.

Health and Safety Management  

·        Work directly with Health and Safety Manager at AMIGOS HQ.

·        Monitor volunteer health and safety and respond as needed. 

·        Ensure all COVID-19 preventive measures and practices are strictly followed.

·        Ensure that volunteers and/or program staff are following quarantine and/or isolation guidelines, when indicated.

·        Agree to be on-call 24/7 for emergent issues that arise with volunteers for the duration of the Gap Program on a rotating schedule. 

·        Understands, upholds and enforces the AMIGOS Standards of Conduct and other policies and procedures

·        Establishes and monitors a medical and emergency procedures system to safeguard the well-being of the volunteers and Staff Team

·        Communicates regularly and promptly with the AMIGOS Health and Safety Manager to report program progress, rule violations, illnesses and other concerns

·        Leads investigations of standards of conduct violations and safety concerns.

·        Handle all documentation and reporting of any health and safety incident in Salesforce.

Program Implementation and Management 

·        Create and maintain relationships with partner agencies and local providers that are based on mutual respect, effective communication and collaboration, and shared visions of involving youth as actors in community development initiatives and cross-cultural exchange. 

·        Provide timely and appropriate communication with a wide range of individuals. Ensure prompt follow-up of inquiries and actions. 

·        Manage and track expenses with weekly reports.

·        Design and facilitate workshops, trainings and seminars in both English and Spanish. 

·        Brainstorm creative and new ways to enhance the gap volunteer experience. 

·        Support with program logistics.

·        Uses tact and sensitivity in interactions with all AMIGOS constituents (ex. professionalism, proper attire, culturally sensitive communication with partner agencies)

·        Provides effective support and guidance for diverse youth volunteers

·        Communicates effectively in English & Spanish and can serve as a translator

Community Engagement

·        Implements positive community development strategies with host communities & partner agency representatives

·        Utilizes effective methodologies for evaluating AMIGOS projects and making recommendations for the future

·        Successfully mobilizes resources for the project

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS 

·        Strong interpersonal and communication skills such as active listening and emotional intelligence in Spanish and English, including spoken and written Spanish fluency and translation 

·        Able to work in a remote environment

·        Strong time management skills 

·        Ability to interact with others in non-judgmental manner

·        Ability to maintain private health information confidential

·        Critical thinking and problem-solving skills and ability to use sound judgment when responding to volunteer’s health and safety concerns. 

·        Adaptable and flexible to the needs of the program and volunteers  

·        Previous experience working directly with young people 

·        Proficiency in Microsoft Office, and willingness to learn customer relationship management software 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

·        Bachelor’s degree in pre-medicine, nursing, public health or another related field 

·        Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness First Aid or Advanced First Aid Certification and Mental Health/Emotional Health First Aid

·        Previous experience with the AMIGOS organization as a volunteer or summer staff member or with a similar organization leading experiential group immersion experiences.

·        Experience with health education.

COVID-19 PROTOCOLS & PRECAUTIONS

This program will be operating during the global COVID-19 pandemic. This means that all staff and students must abide by strict protocols to minimize COVID-19 exposure and contagion. Despite the preventive and precautionary measures, AMIGOS cannot guarantee that you will not be exposed nor contact COVID-19. Given the ever-changing state of the virus, protocols may be adjusted or changed at any time throughout the program.

If you wish to apply to this role you must adhere to the following:

·        Self-Quarantine of 14 days before departure to mitigate the risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19.

·        COVID-19 PCR Nasal test 72 hours before departure which will be dependent on a negative test result.

·        14-day quarantine upon arriving in CR—No personal travel prior to the start of the program.

·        Wearing a mask at all times and maintaining social distancing for the first 2 weeks the volunteers are in CR.

·        Wearing a mask in transit, in public places, anytime outside of the pod for the duration of the program.

·        Free time and free days cannot be taken off-site.

·        Frequent hand washing and cleaning of the space.

·        Strict enforcement of protocols with the volunteers and leading by example.

·        Agree to additional quarantine and/or period of isolation as indicated by AMIGOS Medical Director.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS

·        Works alongside the Gap Director and Gap Coordinator 

·        Reports directly to the Gap Director and Health and Safety Manager.

·        Responsible to the Latin American Programs Manager and Health and Safety Manager.
