BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  The IRC in Wichita resettles approximately 300 newly-arrived refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship.  The Kansas Refugee Economic Empowerment project aligns with the Economic Opportunity focus area of the Americorps*VISTA program. The IRC in Wichita currently has multiple VISTA opportunities.


STIPEND:

This is an AmeriCorps*VISTA position and has an educational award and pays a stipend of about $12,400 annually; medical benefits available through AmeriCorps

 

SCOPE OF WORK:

The Refugee & Immigration VISTAs are responsible for creating, building and maintaining relationships with community partners (schools, religious organizations, community groups, businesses, etc.) that will help increase community resources available to IRC’s clients, consistent with the IRC strategic plan and mission. The Community Engagement VISTA will support the recruitment and mobilization of volunteers and manage the process for receiving and distributing in-kind donations, coordinating media requests, scheduling immigration client meetings, and developing program and curriculum related to health, wellness, digital literacy and financial health. This role will assure that IRC is visible and credible within the community, providing education and information to promote refugee and immigrant issues and increase interest in IRC services.  This is a 1-year position with an option to renew for a second year.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be a US citizen, national or legal permanent resident alien of the US.
  • Must be available and on site 40 hours a week.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area
