Description

Rose Scharlin Cooperative Nursery School is seeking a full or part-time preschool teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. You will work in a mixed age environment of 2.5-5 year-olds and in coordination with our director, other teaching staff, and cooperative parent community to support high quality progressive education for children and families.

Open position starts in August 2018.

We are looking for a motivated and open-minded educator, a team player, who will bring passion and excitement to the school yard, and will welcome and support the growth and development of our children and parents. We offer competitive compensation based on education and experience.

ABOUT US:

Rose Scharlin is a cooperative Nursery School in the hills of Silver Lake. It has the distinction of being the very first cooperative nursery school in Los Angeles and the model upon which other local schools patterned themselves.

Our purpose is to provide a safe, secure, and challenging environment for children; to offer them a range of developmentally appropriate activities; and to reflect the diversity of our backgrounds, our community and our world. We emphasize the process of parents and children learning and working together for the social, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of all. We cherish each child’s need to play. We acknowledge and value our differences, and respect our children as unique individuals with their own abilities and needs.

Our program principle is emergent in practice, based on a constructivist theory of education; it is child-centered and play-based, focusing on social learning, helping children discuss and resolve conflicts with developmentally appropriate language.

A maximum of 24 students attend each day, with 2-3 teachers and 4-6 workday parents. We strive for a ratio of 3:1, and never reach higher than 5:1. The school day is primarily outdoors on our lovely hilltop yard, with a few indoor spaces for quiet play, reading books in the library, or small group activities in the classroom.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Full Time):

• Participate in the school day from 8:30am - 1:30pm five days/week when school is in session (early Sept-mid June). In the spring, teach small group (aka K prep class) 2-3 times per week, during school hours.

• Additional hours (approx. 10-12 per week) for curriculum planning, meetings and office hours, and attendance at school events.

• Energetic, nurturing, and passionate ability to engage with the children while promoting and practicing progressive education.

• Plan and supervise activities that encourage the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development of each child.

• Establish a close and supportive relationship with parents, through regular communication, participation in parent conferences, and commitment to the spirit of the cooperative.

• Understand and assist in compliance with licensing regulations and the cooperative rules. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• A minimum of 12 Core semester units in Early Childhood Education.

• At least 1 year of work experience teaching preschool-age children.

• Excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (written and oral) and ability to communicate clearly, respectfully and effectively with both children and adults.

• Ability to work well with others (staff, children, and parents) and to foster a team environment; Enthusiastic about working in a diverse cooperative environment.

• Physical ability to interact with children, including: picking up children weighing up to 40 lbs., standing for long periods of time, and supervising children climbing and playing on the yard.

• Up-to-date certification in pediatric First Aid and CPR, fingerprinting, LiveScan background check, negative TB test, and immunization records.

• A strong background and understanding of social and emotional child development in children ages 2-5 years old.

• A passion for teaching and life-long learning; openness for growth and self-reflection; willingness to work collaboratively; a passion for partnering with parents to nurture their children; an innovative, creative, and open mind.
