Description

Develop and lead successful state-level campaigns in Maine (and beyond) for policies to protect children and families from toxic chemicals in food, water, and products while supporting sustainable biobased alternatives.

What You’ll Do: Building on our 15+ year history of advancing cutting edge policies in Maine to protect people from toxic chemicals and promote safer alternatives, you will lead development and execution of our state-level advocacy program. This includes all aspects of campaign development and management, political strategy, and, with the support of the leadership team, policy development. You will have a regular presence at the statehouse in Augusta, lobbying legislators and partnering with champions to advance helpful policies or defend against regressive bills. Coordinating with a national network of like-minded organizations, you will strategically advance state-level policies that have large impacts in Maine and potentially beyond.

Who We Need: We’re looking for someone who knows how to, and has had proven success at, making change through legislative action. You have mastered the various skills required to develop and lead highly effective campaigns that achieve results against long odds. You enjoy being an active, immersed participant in the legislative process and have the political acumen and savvy to identify emergent opportunities and pitfalls and respond accordingly. Outside of the legislature, you can identify and exploit opportunities to make positive gains through administrative advocacy and leverage other forms of state action. In addition to having a passion for our work and topic areas, you are committed to progressive values and social change.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Campaign Management – Develop and execute state-level campaigns to win legislative or regulatory action on toxic chemicals in water, food and products, as well as to advance the growth of biobased material production.
  • Legislative Advocacy – Provide a regular presence at the statehouse to advance and win legislation in Maine in support of our issues or defeat harmful proposals.
  • Administrative Advocacy – Exploit opportunities to advance organizational goals through executive branch actions.
  • Policy Development – Identify realistic opportunities to strengthen relevant statutes, regulations, and governmental procedures relevant to our topic areas.
  • Media Relations – Strategically utilize media coverage to advance campaigns in coordination with our communications team.
  • Political Engagement – With the support of its board of directors, identify opportunities for the strategic deployment of our (c)(4) advocacy partner and affiliated PAC.
  • Shared Organizational Efforts – In conjunction with other staff members, support organizational fund development, strategic planning, and administrative activities while also occasionally supporting other program area priorities.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum five years professional experience successfully leading issue campaigns at a similar scale to our work and conducting direct legislative advocacy or lobbying.
  • Necessary skills include: policy analysis; political acumen; outstanding oral communication abilities; excellent people skills; legislative/regulatory drafting; strong writing and editing ability; problem-solving and analytical skills; and strong facilitation skills.
  • Strongly self-motivated and directed, with the capacity to work effectively in teams of diverse people and organizations.
  • Ability to understand the science underlying our policy recommendations and comfort with translating it to a lay audience.
  • Experience working with Maine’s legislature and its processes is preferred, but candidates with experience from other states will be considered.
  • A bachelors or higher degree is strongly preferred, but relevant experience and proven success can be substituted.
