Adelante seeks a full-time Enforcement & Detention Organizer to lead our efforts to organize against detention, deportation, police-ICE collusion, and harsh immigration enforcement in the Birmingham area and across Alabama, and to collaborate with our members and other staff to engage in outreach, popular education, strategy, and leadership development to advance all of Adelante’s work.


The Enforcement & Detention Organizer’s responsibilities will include:

  • Serving as the staff point person for Adelante’s campaigns and programs related to enforcement and detention—currently the Birmingham Sanctuary City campaign and the Shut Down Etowah campaign; working with member leadership committees and allies to plan and implement campaign goals and strategies
  • Working closely with Adelante’s Executive & Legal Director and pro bono lawyers on individual cases of Etowah detainees seeking release from prolonged detention, and Birmingham area residents in immigration custody seeking release on bond and relief from deportation
  • Traveling to visit detained persons in Gadsden and Fort Payne, and their family members in the Birmingham area
  • Providing in-depth training and leadership development to Adelante members, allies, and the community in the areas of immigrants’ rights, community deportation defense, and combatting detention and incarceration
  • Supervising Organizing Fellow(s) focused on enforcement and detention
  • Building and coordinating a network of volunteers trained to verify and respond to reported raids and accompany community members to court dates, probation, and ICE check-ins
  • Serving as Adelante’s liaison to other organizations, community groups, and coalitions addressing immigration enforcement, detention, policing, and incarceration issues
  • Collaborating with other Adelante staff and members on regular outreach visits, info sessions, workshops and trainings for community members and allies around the Birmingham and Gadsden areas
  • Assisting with general administrative tasks such as organizing files, updating contact lists, etc.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Fluent in spoken Spanish, fluent or proficient in spoken English; strong writing, editing and proofreading skills in both languages
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, patience, humility, and ability to relate to low-wage immigrant workers, incarcerated immigrants, and their families
  • Deep commitment to social justice, workers’ and immigrants’ rights; understanding of the interwoven nature of different struggles for black and queer liberation, economic justice, immigrants’ rights and other issues
  • Understanding of and commitment to the principles of popular education, campaign-based organizing, and developing the leadership of directly affected persons
  • Background in immigrants’ rights and anti-deportation organizing strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of the laws, agencies, and processes that govern the deportation, detention and incarceration systems
  • Ability to work early and late hours when necessary, and occasional weekends; willingness to travel and to visit individuals in jails and detention centers
  • Highly organized and self-motivated

Spanish: Fluent in spoken Spanish; strong writing, editing and proofreading skills in written Spanish
