The role of the Valley Regional Literacy Coordinator is to oversee the complete operation of the Valley Literacy Program. This position is to be the main link between Literacy Volunteers and the tutors and students in the Valley office. Primary programs offered are ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), and Basic Literacy for native English speakers. The Program Manager will work closely with businesses and organizations in the Valley towns of Ansonia, Derby, Shelton, Seymour, Naugatuck and Beacon Falls to promote the agency to both potential tutors and students. In addition, the Program Manager will ensure that all the volunteer tutors receive the support and resources necessary to enable them to help adult students reach their maximum level of success. This includes matching tutors with students, helping tutors and students solve problems, locating appropriate resources for tutors and working closely with the community to ensure a steady stream of volunteers.   In addition, this person is responsible for managing and reporting the pre and post tests for the students.


 The Regional Literacy Coordinator will work and partner with businesses, municipalities and organizations, particular workforce development agencies, to promote the program to both potential tutors and students as well as the programs of the American Job Centers.


This is a full-time position, 37.5 hours/week (flexible).

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Work closely with libraries, social service agencies, community groups and businesses in the Valley to partner, promote the availability of Literacy Volunteer classes for adults, and locate potential new volunteers, students sites for the program and donors.
  • Represent and advocate for Literacy Volunteers in the community.
  • Assist tutors with what they need to be successful. This includes curriculum and administrative resources as well as overall support.
  • Coordinate and monitor dates, times, places, and tutors for group tutoring sites as well as remote tutoring.
  • Attend Tutor Training sessions to meet the new volunteers and help train them. Conduct the final phase of training on organizational operations. Set up observations and meetings with the volunteers, then place new tutors at appropriate sites or set up remote tutoring platforms.
  • Pre and post-test all students with the CASAS test administered by the State Dept. of Education.
  • Give tutors and partner agencies (when appropriate) feedback on the test results, with appropriate recommendations for next steps.
  • Prepare monthly activity reports for the Board and other articles as needed to support and promote Literacy Volunteers in the Valley.
  • Participate in Literacy Volunteers fundraisers.
  • Assist the Executive Director at meetings with funders, with results reporting and grants applications.

This position requires excellent organization, management, speaking, writing and interpersonal skills as well as flexibility and familiarity with adult learners. Candidates must be knowledgeable about the Valley community and able to work independently. Candidates must be able to work confidently with data and be able to use Word and Excel as well as Google and social media applications. Fluency in Spanish would be highly beneficial but not required. College degree with at least 3 years of experience preferred. TESOL preferred.
