The Greater Washington Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Abuse (JCADA) seeks a part-time (20-25 hours per week) staff attorney to advocate for and represent victims of power-based violence, e.g. domestic violence, sexual abuse, elder abuse, stalking, and sexual harassment. JCADA's mission is to: SUPPORT victims of power-based violence to become empowered and live safely; EDUCATE the community about power-based violence and appropriate responses; and PREVENT future generations from suffering power-based violence. JCADA is committed to providing high quality services to all residents of the Greater Washington DC community without regard to race, national origin, ability, background, faith, gender, gender expression, color, creed, ethnicity, sexual orientation or immigration status.

 

JCADA’s Legal Program is two-pronged: (1) provide education about the legal process and referrals to individual clients experiencing power-based violence and (2) provide representation to victims of crime in protective and peace order proceedings and represent crime victims’ rights in criminal cases. JCADA’s primary office is located in Rockville, Maryland and is metro-accessible. However, this position will require that a majority of time be spent working in Northern Virginia. Travel within the Greater Washington area is required. Attorneys are also expected to work some evenings to meet with clients as necessary, and some weekends to represent JCADA in the community.   

 

Staff Attorney Responsibilities:

●       Provide civil legal advocacy and representation related to protective and peace orders for victims of gender-based violence;

●       Offer other victims’ rights representation, including privacy protections, assistance with the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, victim impact statements, restitution, and Title IX assistance;

●       Provide trauma-informed consultations, legal information and referrals to pro se litigants;

●       Participate in grant and report writing to funders;

●       Maintain accurate and up-to-date records and documentation in database;

●       Assist victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, and stalking with criminal legal advocacy, support, and representation; and

●       Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

•       Member of the VA bar and with strong preference for someone who has membership in the DC or MD as well.

•       Demonstrated interest and familiarity in issues of power-based violence, gender-based violence or victim advocacy;

•       Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including a keen eye for editing and proofreading;

•       Willingness to work cohesively as part of an interdisciplinary team; and

Bilingual (Spanish-English preferred)
