Founded in 2001, the Street Vendor Project (SVP) is a grassroots membership-led organization working to defend the rights and achieve just working conditions of the community of workers, self-employed people and small business owners who make their living as vendors on the streets and sidewalks of New York City. Through direct leadership development, education, legal support, and strategic legislative advocacy, SVP builds power and community among vendors in the fight to legalize street vending. 

 

About the Position 

The Street Vendor Project is at an exciting moment of growth and opportunity and is looking to hire someone for a new role, Development Associate.  We are seeking a new team member who has the desire to work at a grassroots member-driven justice organization, lead, and implement fundraising efforts for our small and growing worker center.   

The Development Associate will join a fundraising team that includes the Director and Deputy Director. This is a part-time position of 2-3 days per week. They will hold responsibility for foundation, individual donor, and government fundraising tasks: 

  • Work with the Deputy Director and Director to manage the current portfolio of 8-10 foundation grants, serving as the lead grant report and renewal request writer, and maintain relationships with foundation staff 
  • Research and cultivate new relationships with foundation funding prospects, serving as the lead writer for concept notes, inquiries, and new applications 
  • Develop the current Advisory Board as ambassadors and fundraisers for SVP  
  • Support the Fundraising Committee in leading virtual and in person events  
  • Develop and coordinate SVP “allied membership” small events and communications  
  • Collaborate with Deputy Director and Director on developing opportunities and membership programming for donor cultivation 
  • Track city, state and federal government grant and contract opportunities, identify potential matches, and serve as the lead proposal writer  
  • Coordinate City Council discretionary grant requests


Qualifications 

SVP is looking for a Development Associate who: 

  • Understands the challenges immigrant workers face and is dedicated to movement building  
  • Brings 3+ years of development experience working with foundations, government, and/or individual donors 
  • Is an excellent writer and relationship builder and can identify and speak to funder interests 
  • Demonstrates airtight project management skills and the capacity to both plan in work advance and respond to timely new opportunities that may arise 
  • Like most roles in a small organization, this role is flexible, and the exact duties may contain other tasks and duties, for example translating, interpreting, training interns, etc
